Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

Is it polarised though? Feels like in general the majority want a ceasefire and politicians don't.

Apparently its polarised on Urban to the extent that their is not enough pushback and posters are being put off posting here.

I agree I would have thought supporting ceasefire now wouldn't be that controversial

Netanyahu has never sought to disguise what he really wants. He wants the borders of Israel to look like this, and for Palestinians to be gone from a purely Jewish state within these borders.

Shocking how easy it is to get that image btw. Loads on Shutterstock, just labelled 'Israel map'.

cannot imagine being a civilain hemmed in Gaza with no escape , knowing that the world is watching and no one is doing much about it and seemingly doesnt care.
fuck politicians
horrific

they are doing something about it - green lighting it , keeping neighbouring states in their place and Biden stuck $14 billion into the pot for bombs

Do a majority of politicians not want a ceasefire? I’m not sure that’s the case for Labour. Obviously Starmer doesn’t and they’ve got in a right pickly, but hard to say re: “politicians” generally.
Three Labour leaders have called for one…

I think it's easy to forget (I easily forget) the extent of Israeli control of the West Bank. On this map, 'Area C' is controlled by Israel, 'Area B'is under 'joint control' and Area A is under Palestinian control. Areas A/B are divided into hundreds of segments. To cross from one to another you have to pass through Area C and you can only do so with Israeli permission. The West Bank is very tightly occupied.

Pretty Ironic don’t you think ? Green being the colour of Islam and all that

That's been the plan since 1948 really, and with a few interruptions the progress has been fairly steady. But now I think there's a sense among the far right wing there, that .. well to quote another famous racist: a rush and a push and the land that we stand on is ours, it has been before so it shall be again...

It's scary, this cannot end well for anyone. But I think at this point Netanyahu believes he has nothing to lose. Jail for corruption, or Hero of Zionism ... being him, in his position, right now - what would you do?

Nightmare.

This is disgusting. These extremists are being encouraged to act in as vile a manner as possible with no fear of repercussions.

The only hope for a lasting peace is a truly catastrophic defeat for the IDF in Gaza, one that brings Netanyahu down and leads to the formation of a new government headed by someone significantly more conciliatory and humanist than Yitzhak Rabin. A very fucking tall order.

Looking up stuff and came across this hour long documentary on Matzpen.

A short lived but important Isreali anti Zionist socialist group. Mainly Jewish but some Arab members. Came to prominence in the 1967. Opposed the occupation. Got loads of flack for this.

Made links with west european socialists. Bringing the issue of Zionism and dispossession of Palestinians to west. Tariq Ali interviewed as Black Dwarf was first western outlet that published their work.

They were internationalists who saw their struggle as connected to world wide anti imperialism.

Given the times their views fitted in with anti Vietnam war and opposition to Apartheid.

They had connections with Palestinian groups. Not always easy one with differences over armed struggle.

Though a tiny group their ideas were ahead of their time. Zionism being a colonial movement and apartheid- things that are generally accepted now but new to many then.

What comes across was the personal courage of these Israelis. Now even in old age they are eloquent that what is needed is a Palestine where both Arabs and Jews can live together.

One points out when he was growing up in Palestine pre State of Israel Jews and Arabs did live together. As a boy one day all the Arabs left. He couldn't understand why then.

Why did they fail? The old member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine who has warm memories of them say they were unable to move to having bigger roots in Israel. Always remained a small group.

One of Matzpen said a problem is that in Isreali most Jews are Zionists of some form or another- Left or Right or liberal.

Also the question of what happened to Palestinians is a subject that was not talked about. Even though at some level it was their to see. One member of Matzpen who emigrated to Israel become increasingly uncomfortable. When she went in 60s one could still the remains of destroyed Palestinian villages. The Kibbutz wasn't built on empty land. But this was a no no subject.

Matzpen were particularly angered by Golda Meir saying their is no such people as Palestinians.
