Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

Antonio Guterres said on rules of war in his speech today

We must demand that all parties uphold and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law; take constant care in the conduct of military operations to spare civilians; and respect and protect hospitals and respect the inviolability of UN facilities which today are sheltering more than 600,000 Palestinians.

Even the UN are parroting the Islamist terrorist figures without caveat, so I may as well.

Gazan authorities are not the same thing as Hamas.

Israel's apologists for war crimes have long railed against the UN. See here.

Anyway as the water shortages kick in we're going to start seeing much higher civilian deaths than we're seeing even now. The 1400 Israelis and the 471 at the Abu-Ahli hospital will seem like peanuts and all this squabbling will seem like quibbling. Get out onto the street and protest.

Yep. The Israeli state does not want peace. Hasn't done for at least the last 20 years. That's the reality here. Asking 'what do you think Israel should have done?' is an absurd question really.
Actually, they want peace in the sense of the quote Tacitus attributed to English resistance leader Calcagus—“you create a desert and call it peace”. The desert is Gaza and thus reducing it to rubble is no accident but strategic.

"Seventy-five MPs have now signed Richard Burgon’s EDM calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Nearly half of Labour’s backbenchers have endorsed the call, including many not on the left of the Party, including Stephen Timms, Liam Byrne, Tony Lloyd, Mohammad Yasin, Rupa Huq, Sarah Champion, Debbie Abrahams and Jon Cruddas."

Probably struggle to get passed here these days regrettably.

"Israeli journalist Gideon Levy says unless real lessons are learnt from October 7 about its treatment of Palestinians, Israel is destined to repeat the same bloody mistakes in Gaza and arrive no closer to a solution."

Will listen, but it's a fairly obvious conclusion: what is the logic of bombing the shit out of where the hostages are obviously being held. They claim to know where hostages are hiding. They have the technology to record priviate conversations between militants which implies the tools to locate them, but they don't send in special ops teams to receover them. Instead collective punishment.
