Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

People often argue that the English working class benefited from slavery. I’m not sure I like this argument given the English working class weren’t the ones enslaving anyone and were also being exploited by the very same class who were doing the slavery.
The missing word is directly. They did indirectly benefit from it.

This is a tricky case to argue, though. It’s not just slavey, it’s the whole project of colonialism. For example, the UK extracted about £30tn in today’s terms from its colonisation of India alone. By comparison, the UK’s current GDP is about £1tn*. A lot of this enormous extracted wealth went into funding the wealth of the capitalist robber barons and aristocracy. But a lot also funded the Victorian infrastructure that we still use today. It’s hard to argue that the relative advantage that even the poor of the UK have over the poor of India is not partially a result of that colonial time.

*These numbers are from memory, so forgive me if they’re a bit out — exact figures aren’t really the point
The working class are still exploited and not the exploiters. Even If they happen to have railways that improve the movement of capital for the capitalists.

FFS, just shut up, this thread is about the current conflict, plus news and discussion around that.

For those that want to bang on about off-topic nonsense concerning the working class, start another thread.

The argument that the wc of Palestine and Israel are being divided and have more in common than what divides IS part of the fucking discussion.

Sorry to interrupt the thread.

At least 20 out of the 35 hospitals in the Gaza Strip are no longer functioning, the regional director of the World Health Organization told Al Jazeera.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Ministry of Health said that Israel had increased its threats to target and bomb hospitals in the besieged strip, and that the international community must stop this before "more massacres are carried out".

No, you said 'we're all on settlers' land'. But because we're not all on settlers' land in the same way, that is a facile thing to say on this thread.

It's also facile to call people putting Palestinian flags on their social media 'embarrassing' and give them a lecture about statism.

Sorry Danny, I usually agree with you on here, but I think you have these things wrong.
I don't know what point you think I was making. The question was asked - a reasonable enough enquiry - what I (and others) thought of the proposition that by being on settlers land you become a legitimate target.

I strongly disagree, and pointed out that this justification could be applied to anyone. It was a "where would you draw the line?" point.

You can disagree with me on that, but when I said it I was not saying anything at all about the situation of the Palestinians. That's a different question. I was not making any parallel with the experience of 70 years of occupation and ethnic cleansing. I was saying don't target civilians. Regardless of where they are or where they live.

Anyway, back to the the discussion about the actual conflict.

Sky News is reporting that the President of Israel is claiming some of the Hamas terrorists that entered Israel were found to be carrying instructions on how to make chemical weapons!

As if they would do that, they're trying to make mugs of us, whilst making themselves look like mugs.

if everybody sat in a big circle and smoked a big fat joint would be better than what is going on around there

This really should put Netanyahu's claim about Hamas & Islamic Jihad bombing that hospital, into perspective.

I guess at a stretch some of them might have had notes on what proportions might be useful if they came across bleach and vinegar together in one place.

Basic on-site procurement notes, really.

It is a stretch, mind.

hmm so they found a flash drive on one of the fellas,

not like he was crawling across no mans land reading copy of the jolly rogers cook with a bunch of chemicals
