Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

No longer SWP but close enough for the estimate…

Plod say 100,000 x 2 = 200,000

STWC Oberführer says 300k “but closer to half a million” - Let’s call this 400k give or take. Half the Trot estimate and I think the “WhyLikeThis Equation” holds up.

200,000

They're shitting themselves over how many Israeli conscripts will be slaughtered? (I also feel sorry for them caught up in this shit.)
I would give that zero credence. They know from experience what their losses will roughly be and there's no way it's even approaching a number that would hold them back if invading is what they want to do. The major news sources have been reporting a lot of high level diplomacy going on with Israel and the Saudis, Egyptians, et.al (not Iran, obviously). They're biding their time to see what comes up. What that is is pure speculation. I expect the Arab states are more concerned for their own stability than the Palestinians, but they can't ignore them right now.

As pointed out earlier in the thread, the whole of Gaza is about the size of East London. Even if every single Palestinian were a Hamas zealot like they'd have you believe, the place would be razed inside a day.

And you’ve been here nine years?

I don't think it's this. They set out their stall clearly a week ago giving acceptance of high casualty figures.

But I raised the same point on Wed or Thu. Something has put the brake on. Last weekend BN said "We are ready to go".

There's certainly no change of heart. They want deaths, and lots of them. Those 20 lorries aren't being followed up by anything until next week at least (and there are no promises of that even).

The more they flatten buildings and starve people, the easier the invasion?

They have to ACT tough soon, or they will be seen to be weak.

Probably not a great week ahead.
I read that the rescue parties they sent in to liberate the hostages got their backsides handed to them. No idea if that's true or not.

Mark Regev, Senior Advisor to the Israeli Prime Minister: “We don’t target civilian structures”.

(at 10 minutes 15 seconds in the video below).

I must be hallucinating when I saw television footage of blocks of flats collapsing after being hit by IDF missiles. Why does the IDF send text messages to residents of flats warning them to evacuate if it does not target civilian structures?

It's all about how you define "civilian". Obviously by Regev's definition any structure hit by an IDF missile has taken part in a military action through being destroyed and was therefore a military structure. To be civilian it would need to have not taken part in the conflict by being obliterated. See. It's easy if you have neither scruples nor conscience.

No one knows. The cops pluck a figure out of the air as do march organisers. There's very few demos anyone makes any real effort to count or calculate the numbers present.
It doesn't really matter. It's always lots, impressive, small, or pitiful, and that isn't really about absolute numbers. The demos have shown that the propaganda isn't entirely working. That's the important thing. There are plenty of people in the UK who aren't the unthinking unfeeling bastards the establishment assume we are.

Entirely an aside, but I always wonder why the police underestimate the size of demos? There's the obvious reason of course, undermining support for whichever group is demonstrating. However I'd have thought their case for better resources is also undermined if they minimise the number of people they say are on the streets, travelling through the transport network etc.
Incompetence?

Sunak and Starmer probably see it as 100,000 turned out, 67 million didn't :(

So whats your opinion smarty pants? What is the solution? What would have been an appropriate and proportionate response to the Hamas attack?
an appropriate & proportionate response could have been:
1) neutralise the al quassam fighters still in israel, preferably by capturing them alive so they could be tried & sentenced for their crimes.
2) the israeli government resigning over their failure to keep their people safe
3) demands to the gazan authorities to investigate and bring those responsible for the massacre to justice.
4) lifting of the illegal & inhumanitarian blockade of gaza & economic compensation for the years of suffering + rebuilding of the crushed infrastructure of gaza
5) demands of the immediate release of the israeli hostages & the kidnappers brought to justice.
6) the immediate release of the thousands of political palestinian prisoners held in israel.

& so on. perhaps there could have been a peaceful solution somewhere down the line, instead of maimed children & more dead bodies.

Anyone got any idea why Israel rejected the hostage release?

“”32 minutes ago MEE

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said they "will not respond" to Hamas' statement that they offered to release two Israeli captives without condition but Israel refused to receive them.
According to Israeli media, Netanyahu's bureau said: "We will continue to do everything possible to return all the hostages and missing home."
Hamas' Qassam Brigades have announced that they were ready to release the two captives on Sunday, following the same process that was used to release two American captives previously.””

They’re not going to stop the bombing of Gaza, or do deals with Hamas. In other words, fuck the hostages?

Bit harsh. Im not a Trot but the Trots did a lot over organizing anti Iraq war demos etc. Given the Labour party under Starmer have effectively banned any public support for these demos Im glad Trots etc are putting in the work to make them happen

What does surprise me is leading lights of STW are now Counterfire- Chris Nineham and Lindsey German . Yet the biggest turnouts at demos like this and stalls are SWP.

Last week the Counterfire stall looked a bit sad compared to the big SWP and Bookmarks stalls.
