The Ashes 2023

Haven't been watching but if England end up with a lead here after that chaotic first innings I'd be chuffed. Looks like the aussies have been crawling along. With the firepower in their ranks I don't know why they dont just go for it.

I like Mark Taylor. Defo the pick of the aussie commentators.

This is not an Australia side that deserved to retain the ashes.
Yeah, know what you mean, but yet...

A drawn series would be about right. In the scales of moral victories, England have played the better cricket, but they've also fucked up a couple of times. Nah, fuck it, England should be ahead.

I have to say that Bairstow didn't make any attempt to catch that. Really quite disappointing :(

He didn't even move did he

I wondered why Root seemed to take a second to respond and then realised he probably thought Bairstow was gonna go for it

Sorry that's WK'ing 101 in the pro game*. Don't snatch at it and watch your hands

(*easier to get away with without replays, was a key tactic of mine, no-one's brave enough to challenge the early contact :hmm:)

Bad feeling about this. Piggy with mud all over his sweater, about to have the innings of a lifetime

Yep. Shades of Edgbaston with Smith here. Escaping the run out decision, now wafting at Anderson. Ton nailed on

So Root has to bat at 3 tomorrow whether he likes it or not (the experiment with Brooks presumably deemed failed). Moeen can't bat until after lunch or after the 5th wicket falls, whichever comes first. He'll only be hitting boundaries anyway.

Somebody needs to bat very well. Maybe two of them. Then if the Aussies can make 350 batting last, good luck to them.

Btw, there has never been an Ashes without a score below 220. Or a run out. This series is on to break both those records.

He's in the team to hit boundaries so yeh, he might as well try doing it.

I think England can make 400 in the day. Someone always steps up. That's the beauty of this side. Crawley will usually fail but someone else steps in. So be it.

It's been the most bonkers Ashes series ever and I'm fairly sure we won't see anything like it again, all the English players are too old. This is peak bazball but max credit to the Aussies to holding their ground.

Root refusing to bat at 3 seems to me = not a team player. I’d not want him in my team for that reason

Bit harsh. I think his argument was stronger when the openers were more useless and no. 3 would be in more or less straightaway.

I didn't think much of Crawley until this series, he's contributed crucial runs on a couple of occasions now. Duckett I'm less convinced by (I made a joke yesterday at 11:56 about Duckett getting out soon on my cricket WhatsApp).

But Root hasn't really fired this series has he? He's not been the standout batsman of the team. Pretty much everyone has contributed an innings at some point. I'm glad the days of no one getting a score other than Root & Stokes are behind us tbh.

Anyway, him not liking no. 3 is pretty moot now isn't it. He'll just have to manage.

He's second in the averages. He's England's 4th highest run scorer. AND he was denied god knows how many runs with that STUPID declaration* when he was busy trying to win the first Test (118*).

* still bitter
