general somebody is talking about helicopter accident

operations fully underway.

Miserable bastard!

"Iraq belongs to the Iraqi people"

Disingenuous shite.

Fuck the PNAC!

D'oh! Sorry! Off topic.

General Richard Myers is on now.

*Slinks away into the background*

:(

Myers:

"Several hundred targets all over Iraq will be targeted over the next few "hours"."

It has kicked off for real.

(Edited to change "days" to "hours". Striving for accuracy while transcribing from the tv!)

rumsfeld is now talking about how free the access of the press has been to information.

Rumsfeld:

"This is an enormously impressive humane effort to rid the world of.......etc"

General Myers:

"I would prefer not to talk about the Turkish army and any moves they may have made into Northern Iraq." At which point interrupted by Rumsfeld, who reiterates that "some" Turkish troops have always moved in and out of northern Iraq.

Ho Hum!

(Edited to add the Rumsfeld interruption. + A journalist questioned Myers about the fact that the US are moving towards securing the oil wells before anything else. Rumsfeld interrupted and answered that it was being done on "environmental" grounds, in case Saddam set fire to them and devestated the global environment.)

Seems Rummy is going to interrupt the General on every question he is asked....

The first casualty in war is............?

Answers on a postcard to Baghdad please.....

US and Turkish agreement.

Turkey agrees to giving the US two air corridors to Iraq.

Small print allows Turkish army to move into northern Iraq.

"US defence officials say over 3,000 bombs would be part of the military assault."

US experts now say that it WAS the real Saddam on tv after the initial attack.

Yes, but they think it was recorded before the attacks.

They are also saying that they think he is dead.

BOTH cannot be true.

Anyone who cares, please give a thought to the Kurds. The US appears to have sold them down the river for the second time.

:(

The above has just been confirmed by the Turkish Ambassador to the US.

He says troops will be under Turkish command.

God help the Kurds!

There's already comments on Sky, coming from the Kurds, being gutted about this - this could be start of things going pear-shaped:mad:

Saw a report on BBC news 24 from the (i think) syrian border with Iraq.

Iraqi exiles are returning to Iraq to fight the americans!

I also heard a report on radio 5 earlier that fighters from jordan, sudan and egypt are entering Iraq for the same reason.

I cant see many iraqis welcoming the americans as liberators after what is being done to them.

Along with the disturbing news about turkey moving into the kurdish areas this looks like it could turn into a very big and bloody mess.

:(

I think the plan might have been - take out saddam and his senior henchmen whilst incapacitating the security aparatus, then wait for the hoped for coup by the army and mass surrender.

This has not happened so we get 'shock and awe'.

 bastards bastards bastards

'Security from guntoting thugs comes in the form of someone with more and bigger guns. You don't have to like the sherrif but without him someone will inevitably rob your store.'

It has to end.........In think all we can do is wait this one out and hope that the US has honerable intentions...

The Turkish Parliament yesterday evening voted to authorize the dispatch of military forces to south Kurdistan. This approval will authorize the Turkish Government to open up airspace to foreign air forces for up to 6 months and to deploy Turkish troops in southern Kurdistan. Kurdish media

Interesting piece on Kurdish worries about Turkish troops entering southern Kurdistan.

"This time, to keep the Kurds quiet, the invasion will be under the pretext of "humanitarian aid". However the Kurds know very well that the only humanitarian aid Turkey can offer to Kurds is the extermination of their language, identity, culture, habitat etc, etc."Turkish media 2

Baghdad lit up, bombing Baghdad into the stone age, AKA Shock and awe, is well underway, hundereds of bombs and missiles have lit up the night sky and Al-Jazeera Arab TV news has broadcast live pictures of the bombings to millions of arabs and westerners all over the World.

bbc confirming turkey wants to send troops into iraq. faint american protest thus far. didn't the US gaurantee the territorial integrity of iraq?

Hang on till shit hits the fan with Kurds, and Turks!!!!

Latest is from Iraqi UN ambassador; Koffi Fucking Annan has signed over the Oil for Food program to US which means some $10,000 million in the fund is handed over to US to spend as they see fit! Looks like the forty thieves of Baghdad have already got their first haul of cash!

JD - not sure you are right here - at the moment food for oil is suspended and to get it going again it will be put in the sole charge of the UN

Under the existing oil-for-food program, in place since 1996 but suspended this week due to the impending war, Iraq's oil revenues go into a U.N. account out of which President Saddam Hussein's government buys food, medicine and other goods for the general population under U.N. supervision.
Annan called on the Security Council to revise the program to instead authorize the secretary-general to spend the funds raised by Iraqi oil sales.

edited to add

JD - looks like you were right - rest of article worth reading also.

Presumably the U.N. will be brought back in to act as a fig leaf to administer the sale of Iraq's oil under the old oil for food program and the distribution of the proceeds to American corporations. And perhaps some crumbs in the form of subcontracts will drop to the floor for members of our coalition of the willing; no French or Russians need apply.

Iran Oil Depot Hit by Rocket, Iran Warns U.S.

An oil refinery depot in southwestern Iran close to the Iraqi border was hit by a rocket on Friday, officials said, and the Islamic Republic warned Washington and London to respect its airspace.
Government officials, who asked not to be named, told Reuters it was not clear where the rocket, which hit the depot in the city of Abadan at around 7.45 p.m. local time (11:15 a.m. EST), had come from.
"When it happened the city of Abadan shook," Hossein, a government employee, told Reuters by telephone from Abadan which is about 30 miles east of the southern Iraqi city of Basra, and on the opposite side of the Shatt al-Arab estuary from Iraq's Faw peninsula.
