*IRAQ: latest news and developments

yeah, thailand has expleed iraqi embassadors and 8 tourists because of US pressure alleged intelligence.

a helicopter had gone down "accident" my arse

one us convoy was forced to retreat temporarily

bush said ' i feel sorry for the civiliians but we did tell them to leave' - if iraq is the hellhole dictatorship bush states it is, does it have US radio playing loud on every station?

the slaughter will commence and i have the same fears as RD - good post on bodycount by the way

however, the ground war will be essential and will lead to us and uk bodybags being filled, maybe this will put brakes on slightly, but i'm not holiding my breath.

over 1000 anti-war demonstrators arrested in san francisco - check bbc online news for more

Excellent post, WhiteRose, thanks for that. I didn't think there could be as many really in support as they said. I heard about Spain on radio - it seems shocking - you are prepared to play a key role in tipping USUK into war, then step back and have nothing to do with it. I'm torn between thinking that this just sucks and is hypocritical as fuck and that at least it shows the strength of public opinion in Spain (I suppose that must be the reason - wish it applied in USUK)

Thanks again, superb post.

Did you hear the report from the BBC reporter? Sounded like he was right in the firing line. One minute he thought the shells were from the British, the next the convoy was retreating rapidly. He sounded really shaken. You have to respect these war journalists, they are true heroes, bringing the news back home, and without them there could not be many anti-war arguments during conflicts either.

This convoy was on a secretive mission. It seems they were/are going after the oil-fields before the Iraqis set them alight.

I've heard it's about a 6 hour flying time to Iraq.

No doubt they'll be joined by b52s from other bases...

Just read on BBC Teletext (that's tv info service for you non UK folk!) that the new port of Umm Qasr has been taken by the US Marines and that the "Stars and Stripes is flying high above it".

Im sure the Islamic world just loves the sight of that. Surely in the interests of looking even handed they should have hoisted both the US and Iraqi flag. Whose name are they doing this in again? To me that just looks really bad and must send out all the wrong messages.

Sky have pictures of people in Baghdad, live feed.

Far from shocking them into submission, they are reported to be increasing in their support for Saddam Hussein.

Its the underdog thing innit.

They've just reported on the BBC that Turkey is refusing America its airspace on the grounds that America won't allow Turkish troops to enter free Iraqi Kurdistan.

For a brief moment I almost cheered for the USG.

I need to go and have a lie down.

turkey still not opening airspace to US overflights. mainly because turkey wishes to 'introduce' troops into northern iraq against american wishes - for once i am in agreement with the US.

edited -
i swear that stibs' post wasn't there when i started typing.

Allowing the Turks to go into Kurdistan would be suicidal.

Could this be the most intelligent decision made by the Allies in the last year?!?!??

Australia are getting involved because they are a bunch of racist shits and always have been. They even treat their own indigenous people like the dirt from the bottom of their shoes.
sadly true
but not for all of us

it's not a good feeling to be so ashamed of your country, you must feel it too

Ahh, but when are people going to realise when I say "they" I talk about the governments? :)

It was not aimed at the Australian people, they are lovely :)

It is the governments not the people.

yes but that bloody government speaks for me !!!
my prime miniature is a war criminal, I'm just waiting for some legal advice on this, as I want to make a citizens arrest

I mean, as a responsible citizen, I should apprehend this criminal

8 british Royal Marines killed in a helicopter crash in the US-led assault on Iraq.

Could this be the first 8 freindly fire/botched operations casualties?

No-ones saying yet, just says helicoptor crash.

Soilders were worried at the condition of some coptors in the desert sand storms, i saw that on the BBC or ITV 24 hr news channels.

bbc story

The body counts rising

I was just talking ro some people from USA on another forum and they seem to have this idea that I'm a descendant of convicts and therefore my country is full of red neck arseholes

and on this forum I'm seen as also belonging to a bunch od rednecks

whatever, I can't win, eh (or as you may say, innit)

on BBC tv news - went on and on about how well defended USAF Fairford is, mentioning razor wire, high perimeter fences, lights and all the rest then ended with some lame comment about residents in the area. I wonder why they were going on about that? ;)

almost all news agencies report a surge of anti-war, anti-american sentiment in the middle east and islamic nations around the world.

On a U.S establishment note, Michael Levine, has just been interviewed on R.T.E (irish TV) stating that and i'm parphrasingThe war on iraq should be seen as a prelude to a war on iran, that US must be allowed to deal with those that oppose its interests.

Umm Qasr is expected to be in UK hands sometime soon.

from reports this morning there was stiff resistence. Wheres it gone?

1330: Young boy killed as anti-war protesters and police clash in Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
