Operation pillar of cloud. Israeli assault on Gaza

@PalestineVideo have tweeted saying that the Israeli media have reported the shooting down of an Israeli F-16.

Also Demotix photos showing the mobilisation of tanks in Western Negev.

Someone earlier in the thread said (was on phone at work) that they don't think a ground invasion will occur - why call up thousands of reservist Israeli cannon fodder?

A ground invasion is imminent imo - just a matter of when :(

I take presstv with a pinch of salt, but I do like the sound of this;

Iraq has called on energy-rich Arab states to use oil as a weapon to counter the US and Israel, as Tel Aviv steps up its military operation against the Gaza Strip.

if thats what the Palestinians are claiming to have shot down, then they have shot down a MiG-29. the picture in the feed is absolutely not either an F-16 or F-15, theres zero chance that the aircraft pictured is an Israeli aircraft.

why do people make claims that can be disproved so quickly and so completely? seeking a propoganda win (however temporary) when the facts can't be independantly judged in the short term is reasonable, but making bollocks claims that erode credibility for the sake of 2hrs worth of 'ho-ha' is just dumb as fuck...

They don't do propaganda, as you well know!

Any thoughts on Egypt & Iran getting involved? or hot air & threats?

That fighter jet stuff will be Palestinian/supporters of palestinians propaganda.

No useful thoughts on Iran or Egypt at this point. Egypt will make more noise than usual, and I wouldnt completely rule something more interesting out, but its hardly a safe bet.

I'm not convinced that Morsi in Egypt can just turn a blind eye to what's going on in Gaza in the same way Mubarak did.

This latest attack might put the 1979 Egypt - Israel peace treaty in jeopardy, but I don't think it'll lead to out all war.

I'm not getting that though mate - Israeli media reporting that they lost an F-16 - the picture according to those who know their aircraft are saying it's a photograph of a Libyan MiG-29 shot down in 2009?

is it not a distinct possibility that its Israeli media reporting Palestinian claims? if their journalists are as shit as our journalists on Defence issues they wouldn't know an F-16 from HMS Dreadnought, so they probably just saw a pointy thing with flames coming out the back and 'yeah, ok, they got one'.

BBC still reporting 'reports of' and 'have claimed', but i've not seen them using this picture as evidence - if thats what they are basing it on then they are just wrong.

I don't think Israeli media are reporting it. Twitter sources are claiming that Israeli media are reporting it. I would dearly love it to be true but I remain sceptical.

...If it's true, we'll hear about it sooner or later.

yeah - the only way of telling will be pictures of a IDF F-16 wreckage, or confirmation from the IDF - the IDF are likely to be slow (12hrs?) because they will be trying to retrieve the pilot, destroy whats left of the airframe, and inform NOK.

tbh, if it is true, (and particularly as the Palestinians are claiming that they've got the pilot alive after ejecting on Twatter) the Palestinians should already have pictures of the wreckage online. that they haven't...

"It is a cardinal law that you don't do that to a Thought for the Day presenter – that's a separate thing and you don't ask them questions like that".

You don't? Why not? Is Today a news and current affairs programme or not? Does the guest know they're in a radio studio? That there are microphones present? If they say something "off the record" when there are microphones present, then they are fucking idiots. Now add to that the fact that the guest knows the Today programme goes out in the morning, round about the time they are in the studio, and that the people speaking to the guest are the presenters of the Today programme.

Given that much of the talking heads discussion about the BBC recently has been about restoring trust, its pretty hilarious that they are now in trouble for not warning a guest not to tell the truth.

Meanwhile the internet gets it all wrong, no truth here, no no, your safe baby, it cant happen here. Oh the decline of quality news, oh woe is me. The emperor has got no clothes on, and his face has fallen off.

And the foreign office no longer pay for the world service, whats the wrold coming too, whats a 'reasonable man' to think?

Even though they in fact did. "Erm, we...we're live" (before you actually speak honestly).
