Freemasons in the UK, a general discussion

Ok, here's a question for you. I'd like to join. How do I do it? Do I just turn up?

Well you could drop me a PM for starters. :)

Is there a website you could direct me to?

Sure: http://www.ugle.org.uk/

I co-run a martial arts club, and we take anyone who comes through the door. We wouldn't have it any other way, and we would be a very shitty club if we did. But this isn't like that, is it?

It pretty much is. If you're a male over 21, not a criminal and preferably not an arsehole, you just need a proposer and a seconder and you'll probably get in.

Depends on the area, really. Sometimes all the men in the CIU are also in the bloody masons. Then you get lodges in proper posh areas that only have landed gentry and the properly wealthy and none of yer middle class riff raff. Like any of these clubs they tend to recruit from people they know, so you end up with loads of that type, whether it's class, money, trade, whatever.

What's him then?

iaido. Japanese way of the sword. I also do jodo, the way of the stick. :)

All rich - yes?
If you consider train drivers to be rich, if you believe bus drivers are rich, there are lodges for train and bus drivers, there are lodges for printers, painters builders.

If you just turn up at your local lodge I am sure they will be very helpful

@Free Spirit:
Why don't you just pop down to your local lodge and ask the people there, I am sure you would get a far better picture talking face to face with people then you will writing on a BB

I also note that one of the pieces of graffiti scrawled on Saviles Glencoe house was the eye of providence.

according to someone i know who is connected to the people who did that, the freemasonry sign there is because the vandals believe that savile was protected by his freemasonry connections.

Show me the bus driver lodges, show me the train drivers lodges.

FWIW, i know shit all about lodges, but when i was growing up a lot of my friends' parents in gants hill were freemasons. the men in question were all taxi drivers, jewish, not affluent really. the only other freemason i've ever known personally (with all according caveats) was my scout leader, who managed a ford garage. i'm not taking sides in this discussion or owt, just wanted to mention something loosely related!

So regional daft things. Nothing else?
There are lodges for almost every trade, I know there is a London tube drivers lodge.

I think you may be surprised at the number of working class Freemasons. If you are really interested I am 100% sure that you are one of the posters here that are very capable of looking this stuff up for yourself.

Perhaps you could quote some articles that refer to the bloke (or woman) who walked into his local Catholic church and just by asking them the question, managed to get the Catholic Church to admit to and finally deal with the accusations of decades of abuse of young kids by priests being covered up by the Catholic church across at least 2 continents.

If you can, then I'll be sure to head down to my local lodge and ask them to check it out for me.

If not, I'd respectfully suggest you stop making such naive posts.

Lots of w/c members of tory party. I'm sure that you can look that up for yourself.
W/c here means self made artisans and their kids right? The awright geezer is the price for the next gen?

I am sure you could walk into many churches and the people would admit to child abuse with-in the church.

Is it really naive to tell you to go and speak to the people who are masons, do you have any understanding of how lodges are set up and how they meet and interact with other lodges? Everything you could ever want to know about Masons affiliated to UGLE and there rituals can be found very easily via the internet.

My pointy being that you do not have to be rich as you asked in your post above. Working class means working class
