Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

off topic. personal abuse.
You're a fucking snowflake. Like I said upthread - you're more than happy to dish out the abuse, but anyone who dares challenge your bullshit flings you straight into victim mode.

That's probably the sum total of what anyone on here needs to know about you.

That's not "abuse", it's commentary.

I think Zelensky’s support for Israel’s ‘right to defend itself ‘ is far more connected to be seen siding with ‘the West’ than anything else tbh .
There’s also the factor of Israel having a number of pieces of military kit that would be useful to Ukraine (air defence and drones in particular). Because Netanyahu was quite close to Putin, Israel wouldn’t even allow third party countries to re-export stuff to Ukraine, including items that only contained small elements of their licensed technology. That situation might well have changed.

I think the Ukrainians thought they'd get a lot more support from Israel than they did - the Eastern European heritage of many Israelis, that Golda Mier was from Kyiv, the 'small, independent state with a big enemy trying to crush it' thing - but they faced three big blockers to that: that the Israeli political class is far more 'American' than it is 'European', and the large influx of Russian Jews on the last 30 years who are seemingly far less hostile to the SU or to Russia than you might think they'd have been, which is a change from 20/30 years ago, the corruption and nationalist/racism of Netanyahu himself, who is far more of a Putin figure than he is a Zelensky figure, and that Israel probably sees itself more as the Russia in this story than the Ukraine...

So, these FAB bombs the Russians are going to sweep all before them with - are these the same bombs that have very similar capabilities/properties to the Paveway, (French) Hammer and JDAM bombs that every NATO air force has been using for 30+ years?

The RAF was using laser guided glide bombs in 1982, when old Vlad was a Captain in the KGB....

Despite Golda Meir being born in Kyiv , Ukraine since the the days of the Ukrainian Socialist Republic has had policies of of recognising Palestine as a state and supporting motions against Israeli occupation. It's only since the Russian invasion that Ukraine has abstained on issues like a ceasefire and sided with America and the UK. Probably conscious of other world wide opinion ,Ukraine has moved to the 'abide by international law' position. A poll by KiiS in December showed that 69% of Ukrainians supported Israel, 18% both sides and 1% supported the Palestinians ( 4% in the East).

pretty much exactly the same.
are the raf flying 60kms away from the frontline to drop them? is the ukrainian airforce flying 60kms from the frontline to drop them?

and i think the russians seem to be able to block the gps so that would make jdams fairly unusable?

Maybe, but there've been a number of incidents reported of them jamming themselves by accident so they can't just throw the switch to "on" and leave it there. Military kit is designed to frequency hop, so they can't just jam US GPS without taking out all sorts of other kit in the area.
Even then, JDAMs are designed to be used in such an environment. It's just that the accuracy suffers, going from a (reported) 5m CEP to 30m. Lobbing a bomb from 15 miles away and landing it in a 30m radius circle is still pretty good going, and more useful than artillery. (as the Russians are proving)

fair enough. though they still can't, or won't, get close enough to drop them.
and dont the russians use glonass?

Russia has been using glide bombs effectively for six months or so, it’s fairly cheap compared to missiles and they do a lot of damage compared to artillery. Accuracy isn’t great, but fine if the target is something large like an apartment block or hospital. Ukraine has JDAMs but not in great quantity, nor the aircraft to deliver them, and Russia is fairly competent with electronic warfare (which can also affect stuff like HIMARS, though they also use inertial guidance so only limits accuracy slightly.

Ukraine did move one of their mobile Patriot batteries to the front to strike back at Russian aviation (with some reported success), but they lost two launchers to an Iskander missile strike a couple of weeks ago - it appears Russia has got better at spotting things and quickly relaying information to missile crews, something that for most of this war has been beyond them, targets have needed signing off at a high level and this process tended to mean things had moved out of the way by the time they got round to firing.

With the patriot launchers it was claimed that they’d been parked in the same spot for three hours awaiting instructions, which is the sort of mistake Ukraine can’t afford to make, but maybe one born of complacency based on Russia’s crap command structure. They also lost a couple of helicopters on the ground to a similar missile strike, again sitting ducks and not spaced appropriately. I imagine they will revise how stuff is deployed based on this apparent improved chain of command of their opponents. Both sides are developing and adapting as the war progresses.

Older stuff would be Glonass entirely, but for newer kit...

I'd wager they use some off-the-shelf part from China that will happily use GLONASS, GPS, Galilieo, or BeiDou depending on what it can grab a signal from first. It's quite clear the Americans are much more dependent on it than they are, so they can be pretty confident of a good feed. Same way they've been using Starlink in some places. If your enemy will let you use their kit, and it's newer and better than yours... Well, why the hell not?

The kit in a Falcon 900 is military grade as standard...that was a day at the office I won't forget

Where do you get the above information from?

Zizek? Oh please. Bless
