Ukraine and the Russian invasion, Feb 2022 - tangentially related crap

Russia's shot down it's own copy of the US's X-47B that went awry, to try and stop it falling in the Ukrainian hands, they have the wreckage anyway, it seems.

I suspect Ursula will make some difficult decisions soon. Better to forcibly deport the Ukrainian men than have German troops getting involved.

US expected to pay up to $20bn into G7 loan for Ukraine
FT. 18/10/24 https://archive.ph/DGeG5
The US is willing to provide up to $20bn as part of a G7 loan to Ukraine that will be repaid with profits generated by Russia’s frozen assets, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The talks over the loan are accelerating as western officials want to provide funding to Kyiv before the end of the year, conscious that if Donald Trump wins the US election in November, Washington’s aid to Ukraine could be cut off.
G7 countries have been locked in months-long negotiations over the structure of the $50bn loan agreed in June, with Washington’s contribution until recently expected to be smaller than initially planned after the EU failed to guarantee that the Russian assets would remain immobilised for at least three years.
But US officials on Friday indicated to their G7 counterparts that Washington would provide the full original amount, about $20bn. This would be possible, they said, even if the EU failed to convince Hungary’s premier Viktor Orbán to drop his veto on extending EU sanctions — a condition demanded by Washington.

Not gonna happen, far too many snouts in the trough for anywhere near all that wonga end up in Ukraine's coffers
There's no way Russia, if it even agreed to such a thing, would pay it out in cash. It would be favourable trade rates and discounts. Russia can't afford to pay for the damage they've done to Ukraine, and frankly the West wants to fund it themselves so they can snap it all up in return.

Andrey Lugovoy, one of the 2 KGB killers charged with the lethal poisoning of an ex-KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko in London by radioactive Polonium-210, is sick with an advanced stage of prostate cancer.

The sickness may be linked to his handling of a highly poisonous radioactive substance in 2006, when an ex-KGB whistleblower Litvinenko was poisoned by tea in a London hotel.

The second killer, Dmitry Kovtun, died in June 2022, supposedly from COVID, at the age of 56.

Ukraine's bid to add Russia to FATF's 'black list' fails again, rejected by China, India and others
October 25, 2024
PARIS, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine's bid to have Russia added to an international list of countries with weak money laundering compliance has failed again after the move was rejected by countries including China, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Two sources with knowledge of the discussions that were held this week at international financial crime watchdog FATF in Paris said Brazil was also among the group that rejected the proposal. One source said Ukraine's proposal to shut out Russia had been postponed to gather more evidence.
The FATF, whose members states include Britain, France, Germany, the United States and other major economies, declined to comment, saying it was due to update what it calls its "grey" and "blacklisted" nations after the end of its plenary discussions on Friday.

The Ukrainian government has argued that Russia, which faces various sanctions from Western governments in response to its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, poses a threat to the international financial system, citing its close links to other "blacklist" countries Iran and North Korea among other arguments.
The FATF last year suspended Russia's membership, saying Moscow's war in Ukraine violated the organisation's principles.

I see Caolan Robertson one time aide to Tommy Robinson ran out of TR stories to flog to the media and is now on the reporting from Ukraine gravy train. Ukraine doesn't deserve this.

Posting here as best place I could think of:

"A pro-Russia, far-right politician has won the first round of Romania’s presidential elections, according to the electoral commission, dealing a major blow to the country’s political establishment.
Călin Georgescu, formerly linked to the radical nationalist AUR party, had run as an independent and was not seen as a frontrunner. As no candidate received more than 50 per cent of Sunday’s vote, Georgescu will take part in a run-off in two weeks.
If Georgescu wins he will hold the most powerful office in Romania, with the right to nominate the prime minister, conduct coalition talks and have the last word on security and foreign policy matters."

"
Georgescu has previously questioned Romania’s membership of Nato, arguing the country did not see clear benefits from the alliance. He has also criticised the placement of an anti-missile shield in Romania, in statements that echo Russian president Vladimir Putin.
In 2020, he called Putin one of the world’s few “true leaders” and said the Russian president “loved his country”."

A reminder where Romania sits

great bunch of lads

The two main figures in the AUR are its founders: George Simion and Claudiu Târziu. Simion, who has strong links with football fan circles, has been known for years in both Romania and Moldova as the main promoter of ‘unirea’ or the unification of the two countries. In 2011, he created the Acțiunea 2012 (Action 2012) platform, bringing together over 30 ‘unionist’ (pro-unification) non-governmental organisations, primarily from Romania and Moldova, but also representing the Romanian diaspora in other countries.

The platform has organised numerous marches and events promoting the idea of unification over the years. Simion has never attempted to conceal his nationalist views or his aversion to minorities living in Romania, including ethnic Hungarians. He is also known for criticising the Ukrainian government for the way they treat the Romanian minority.[1] In turn, Târziu is a journalist strongly associated with Orthodox church circles. For years, he has been involved in the Coalition for the Family, a conservative NGO that led to a referendum on including the definition of marriage as a union of a woman and a man into the Romanian constitution being held in 2018 (the referendum was invalidated due to the low 21% turnout).

Since its inception, the AUR has been accused by its critics and most mainstream media of drawing on the traditions of the Iron Guard and the Legion of the Archangel Michael, the Romanian fascist and anti-Semitic organisations which operated in the interwar period and during World War II and which co-governed the country after Marshal Ion Antonescu took power in 1940–1941.

AUR leaders try to fend off these accusations, but they are not groundless. Many members of this party (including Târziu) have repeatedly expressed approval for the acts of those organisations’ representatives in the past. Călin Georgescu, who gained notoriety for numerous controversial statements – for example, in 2020, he claimed that Ion Antonescu and Corneliu Codreanu (the founder of the Legion of the Archangel Michael) were heroes – was the AUR’s honorary chairman and was promoted by the party as a potential candidate for prime minister in 2020 and 2021.[2]

The anti-Hungarian bit is interesting - presumably these cunts aren’t in Orban’s orbit like most other Eurofash politicians?

Georgescu actually beat the AUR who didn't make it it into the second round. A case of nationalism being trumped by ultra-nationalism. However, the press that I have read on the issue isn't concerned that Georgescue is far right its more a case of more he is not in the right far right camp.

There are far right parties in the government of seven EU states Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands and Slovakia and large opposition parties in Germany, France, Sweden and Austria. In many cases the far right is business as usual within the EU.

The AUR who Georgescu beat , are in the ECR group in the EU , home of Meloni who as a far right leader is widely accepted and embraced within EU and NATO circles because of her support for Ukraine and NATO are are other members of the ECR. Ukraine is the filter for which much of the media apply for 'they might be far right however they are our far right'.
