Ukraine and the Russian invasion, Feb 2022 - tangentially related crap

AP article which blames TikTok and unexplained voting patterns however deeper inside are a couple of comments that might be nearer the truth. Also describes the Save Romania Union party as being progressive . Funnily enough, the Save Romania Union was part of the United Right Alliance in the elections and although its was originally a populist anti-corruption party it is now full of centre right business people.

My Romanian neighbour seems to blame this on Romanians living in Germany, of all things. That and his mum. He's very much hoping it will pan out like it did in France for the second round. He will be voting, which will be the first time since moving here >10 years ago.

Out of 900,000 Romanian citizens in Germany. Georgescu received 83,611 votes which is less than 10%.

How many voted? Andre's never voted since leaving Romania, doesn't really agree with the idea of being able to vote when you don't live there any more.

On this link below there is the breakdown of votes for Germany and if you hover the mouse over each country you get the winner in each diaspora in each country (I don't know if it works on the phone).
The quick narrative is that the 'pro Russian' candidate Georgescu didn't win in the Romanian diaspora in Russia where Lasconi the opponent in the run off won, or indeed any of the post soviet states, or China but did in the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Greece and Bosnia -Herzegovina.
There tells a tale?

A Belarusian man was detained in Vietnam and sent back to Belarus to be charged with terrorism for his alleged involvement with the Kastús Kalinouski regiment (fighting against the Russian invaders in Ukraine). Vasil Verameichyk, 34, could possibly face the death penalty.

Verameichyk is the first member of the regiment in custody in Belarus. Belarusian state TV on Wednesday night showed footage of Verameichyk in handcuffs being escorted off a plane in Minsk, the Belarusian capital.

A series of blogs were made about this before the full on war special military operation by Mikhail Korotkov.

He wrote said:
“There is a ghost train on the railways of our country. It is not in the timetables or in the Russian Railways systems; its windows are curtained, the locomotives have no numbers and identification marks, it rushes like a madman, and all the other scheduled trains make way for it. Emblems of the Grand Service Express are flaunted on the sides of its carriages, the signs always show the same route ‘Evpatoria - St. Petersburg’.”

Warned off posting anything else about this by the FSB he's closed his account and fled to Sri Lanka.

It's true and whilst the scumbag's got to go again it's playing with fire. He's very much a Trump, Romanians first and so on. When evidence of serious Kremlin interference was found he retorted: “I think it’s the first time in the history of the world when a state is organising an action against a candidate to stop him from running,” - sounds very much like Trump and people want change, so there's every chance he'll get voted for again...

if not more so this time.... can only be counterproductive IMO

Aside from unusual TikTok patterns allegation ,which I don't understand tbh, what we're the voting irregularities, breaking of electoral rules, etc?
I've no idea, it sounds a desperate play from a deep part of the state, but short of proof of actual vote rigging I don't see how a rerun can stop the inevitable.

I'm sure its disastrous news that Georgescu might (will) win, and perhaps everything should be done to stop him - I'm not in a position to quantify the level of threat he poses - but from where I'm sat this looks counterproductive and ineffective

The first question about possible 'outside 'interference should be how did the state allow this to happen instead the focus shifted onto TikTok which as far as I am aware hasn't been banned for these elections and in any case was used by all parties/candidates participating in the election. That's not deny that social media is used by external stateactors however its more of a feature these days than the exception.

As I understand it they are re-running the entire election which means that the two candidates who would have had to face off in the second round start from scratch with those who didn't. In the first elections, the main rightwing populist party was outflanked by him, similarly, the main neo liberals for EU were out flanked by the liberal. I suppose it could be back to normal and the established parties or there might be a feeling of sod it we voted the way in which we wanted so last time so we will do it again. I don't think the latter is certain tbh however this issue of wanting new elections when thing don't go the way various parties want and who are in a position to influence isn't good.

Elections go on until the pro EU candidate “wins”.

Three Black refugee women talk about their experiences; they're also really talented musicians. And they meet Jax Jones and make music with him.

This was fascinating... Two hour interview with German FT man.... Interesting insight into German politics... I'm posting here because the most fascinating bit for me was that because of it's geography and war history Germany looks more to Warsaw and Moscow than it does to Paris and London

Many German politicians, it is said, have made it their business to attempt to create peace with Russia through trade and other connections. Nordstream one example of this. Never again shall Germany and Russia war, is their mindset

Crucially, he says that even now there is a lot more accommodation for Putin's position regarding Ukraine than you might imagine. They also have a better understanding of what the iron curtain was, and what the post cold war settlement was meant to be.

Worth understanding as NATO moves to boost it's military spending

Made it their business to create peace through trade = get seats on the board and their noses in the trough and gobble up the roubles.

As to looking to Moscow and Warsaw, you can't, in the current, climate accommodate to both. You have to a choice.

Yes - absolutely that - sitting on Gazprom boards etc etc - integrated

Well yes, they've found themselves in a quandry, but according to Wolfgang they've not come down on one side at all yet. Youve only to see the German states response to Likud's genocide to see how a dose of reality doesnt necessarily change opinions and allegiances
