Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Zizek? Oh please. Bless

You are aware that the actual discussion in that thread really doesn't live up to the title, yes?

Zizek? Oh please. Bless

zizek is shite but have you seen the video of him with two hot dogs on the go? i had to take my hat off to that.

Something that nobody one these boards has ever said about you.
Au contraire. I have a great deal of regard for discokermit even tho we've not always got on. His thread about his family history showed an impressive ability and tenacity with archival sources and is, for me, one of the most interesting and best threads on the boards. Discokermit's forthright frankness and honesty mean he's not perhaps as gentle in his dealings with others as he might be - maybe he's not charming but he is open and genuine and many other posters would benefit from being more like that

What did he say wrong in the twitter post?
If you think the issue is about whether what Zizek says is wrong or right in that interview with Piers Morgan you are going to miss the delicious irony of Gerashchenko, uncritically bigging up an author who once claimed that capitalism couldn't be reformed and that some form of post Soviet world communism was the way forward. Gerashchenko himself set up the notorious Myrotvorets site which blacklisted those who had 'separatist' views, alleged or otherwise, in Eastern Ukraine and published personal details . This led to the murder of at least two people, dismissal from work in others and assault and harassment by the right wing groups. Ironically something that Putin himself might have been proud of.

Unfortunately, Zizek is wheeled out these days not for anything progressive and certainly not for anything Marxist but as a sort of performing bear . Whatever insight his many works once offered has somewhat been diminished by a series of comments posing as 'cultural critique ' about migrants.

As The Jam once said 'that's entertainment'.

It's a classic tragic journey isn't it? Get acclaim for provocative ideas in your area of expertise, the media then defines you as a Public Intellectual and in order to maintain your position you're forced to increasingly hold forth on topics you have a much shallower understanding of in ways the people handing you the gig prefer. It's dancing bear or back to obscurity, and eventually you find yourself being paired up with your opposite number on the same road talking bollocks at each other for the slapping flippers of your pseduo-intellectual, parasocial fanbases.

Zizek on Putin:

I have seen never seen the appeal of Zizek.

But Morgan is the real idiot.

Ukraine giving up it's nuclear weapons was a green light for Putin to invade.

He might want to check the time line on that one.

And if Ukraine had somehow been able to kept "it's" nuclear weapons how would they have launched them? How would they have maintained them?

Hard ro tell from that graph but the upswing looks to have started before 2022 and just looks to be continuing. I'd say the invasion and therefore sanctions happend about half way up the line.

But hard to tell from a graph that is not designed to convey meaningful information. They could have started the X axis around 2018 and it would be a lot easier to see what was happening when.

It looks like there's only data on an annual basis. So 2021 wasn't much higher than the previous peak (though it was higher), but it absolutely skyrocketed after that in 2022.
It is a poor graph, and annual data only makes it worse.

Yeah could be - this is why I like tables better. :D

Edit - Also work noting that that graph is tracking value not quantity, and they are quite different things.

There’s been loads of tables , graphs and articles which have explored this and other ways Russia has mediated the sanctions . I suppose that in itself isn’t surprising, what is and has been the posturing from western states about how they would tighten the screw ,and their apparant inability to come up with plan B .

Capitalism always finds a way.
