Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I'll be honest, I don't think NATO iss entirely blamless...

There was no chance of Ukraine joining NATO anytime soon, Russia had ensured that by the their backing of the rebels in the east, because any new country has to be unanimously approved by NATO members and factors taken into account will include, among others, “unresolved external territorial disputes”.

The whole NATO thing is just a red herring, used as an excuse by Putin.

A comrade of mine had this to say yesterday :

Initially the US government has got what it wanted, which was to take advantage of the Ukraine situation as an excuse to end the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany, making Germany reliant on liquified natural gas from the USA at four times the price. Russia won't care too much. It'll ship its gas and other raw materials to Iran and China instead, cementing the emerging alliance that challenges American world hegemony. A war in Ukraine will be fought by proxies for both sides, as it was in Syria. State capitalism versus the neo-conservative variety.

I hope that this war backfires on Putin, because apparently alot of Russians don't want war, especially with other slavs.

No but also the Ukraines now have want of men and equipment beyond what I think NATO will provide.

Ireland has announced they will take refugees and anyone who has relatives in Ireland.
It would have been better if they all threatened to join NATO if Russia invaded Ukraine before this invasion, as it was the only weapon they had, especially Ireland which doesn't even have an air force, has no tanks, has a brown water navy at best (I am not even sure they got that) and 6,000 soldiers. tops

We didn't seem to learn lessons from our own history. Did the West REALLY believe invasion wouldn't happen? What a waste of time with these peace negotiations. You don't amass this number of troops without invading. Look what happened during the Gulf War. Hundreds of thousands US troops were stationed near Iraq. They were not prepared to just grab their belongings and withdraw.

So, your comrade believes that the entire situation has been engineered by America. Did they explain how precisely?

Denmark and Finland are ready to take refugees from Ukraine, both their prime ministers have said.

It's weird seeing Jeremy Corbyn & Farage singing from the same sheet of shit.
Care to show that to be the case?

This idea that anyone who dares criticise the role the west had played in this is an apologist for Putin is nonsense.

The idea Corbyn is an apologist for Putin is nonsense - show an example if you disagree.

The far right have actively apologised for Putin, such as on that Fox News piece. The hymn sheets are very different.

Starmer did, and I agree with him, cite Salisbury

Such little ambition did the Ukrainian government have to join NATO that they wrote it into a new constitution.

Another little snippet of BBC reporting from their live updates page that implies documents are being burnt.

On the street bounded by the golden domes of St Sophia’s and St Michael’s cathedrals, it’s dark and surreal.

Jets are flying overhead intermittently and there’s an acrid smell in the air. It smells like burning papers.

Three soldiers came by, looking for a man with a drone. Everyone is on edge.
