Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Got this off of Twitter, again, don't know if it is true, but sounds good, going on the attack!!!

"So something interesting that could be developing at the UN: Ukraine appears to be laying the groundwork to challenge whether the Russian Federation is the legitimate successor to the USSR’s seat and veto on the Security Council"

Boris is flailing his arms about in parliament in the authentic muppet manner - but someone just asked him about where Zelenskiy might go if Ukraine "as seems likely, is overwhelmed". If I heard him correctly there's a chance they might form a government-in-exile in UK? I may have misheard, it's happening at a lickety-split.

the corruption and shitiness of the Ukrainian state, the US/EU/NATO's provocative eastern policies and the wests' self aggrandising mishandling of the collapse of the communism are all academic now - none of that remotely excuses what the Russian state is doing - just fucking appalling and no good outcomes for anyone. WW2 analogies got trundled out far too often but the echoes of 1939 are a bit too fucking close to comfort IMHO: major power with chip on the shoulder run by ruthless, paranoid nationalists invades neighbour on utterly spurious grounds.
Meanwhile the rest of us watch the carnage unfold whilst being utterly powerless to do anything about it.
Global geo-politics have just taken a very dangerous and unpredictable turn. Putin is not playing by rules of rational real-politick - hes totally kicked the table over.
My kids (7 and 9) were listening to the news and getting really upset - I was having to tell them that we would be ok and everything would be fine and no we wouldn't end up at war - but I really don't know anything for certain about how bad this might get. Major economic shock and huge refugee crises looks pretty nailed on - and thats just for starters. Who the fuck knows anymore? We could be rationing food and fuel within a year.
I'm pleased to see you add the special k

Professional nerds should keep tabs on cyber security news. Russia has deployed destructive malware in Ukraine. Why should this be of interest? There’s history of Russian cyber attacks on Ukrainian targets that have spread internationally.

A bit technical:

Saw this on Twitter..
I wonder if it is true,
Git this off of Twitter, again, don't know if it is true
Maybe hold off posting until you know it is true?

There's all kinds of rumour, nonsense, propaganda and lies on Twitter. Anyone can post up any old shit on Twitter. I could go and post that it's been authoritatively shown that Putin has drunk a specially designed super serum, grown to 100 feet tall and is currently stomping down the Dnieper valley kicking aside tanks like toys while whistling Stravinsky tunes.

It's hard enough to know what's going on without every rumour that appears on Twitter being thrown into the mix.

I mean, I dunno how helpful the comparison is, but I found myself thinking "Russian Brian Haw?"

Also, for anyone who does Telegram or speaks Ukranian or possibly both, here are a couple of Ukranian antifa channels:

Translation of the most recent post from vindicta161:

I have a friend from Moscow, we don't want to shoot each other while politicians make money on it. I wrote to him about the banner and he immediately supported my initiative. The people of Russia must show that they do not want war. Yes, it is unlikely that something will happen to a person like Putin, but at least something should be done instead of sitting and watching what is happening. If there are readers from Russia, I urge you to such actions. If there are readers who have friends in Russia, encourage them to such actions! Post cards, make stencils, whatever you want, but remember safety. Peace to all! No war but class war! #from_subscribers Do not be silent! Silence = agreement with the imperial regime.

Over 700 arrests today in Russia

Sounds like complete bollocks to me.

It was the case 10 years ago. I lived out there a bit and saw it change dramatically. A lot of casino's and strip clubs opened up. No doubt there was more underground but not a world I sought.

The daughters of a guy I did business with said that it was 'acceptable' for married Cypriot men (including their father) to have a Russian mistress. Most brought expo flats for said mistresses and nothing was said.

Cyprus let any Russian who purchased a property was immediately granted citizenship. As I recall that included their families and such.

Cyprus has a long and deserved reputation for tax dodging.
...and let Kim Philby get away to Moscow back in the First Cold War.

I worked for a Russian billionaire, him and all his family had Cypriot passports, it's a well trodden road as you say.

The Soviet Empire collapsed 30 years ago and let the east European countries go and freed the "Republics", but it always felt like that east European countries had to consolidate their freedom and independence before Russia changed its mind, Ukraine has proved this niggling doubt, feeling right.

I don't think Putin's position is that strong if he isolates himself in the longer-term. Which he could do depending on how it goes in terms of being defined by a war whose outcome and duration is uncertain (I mean they nearly always are).
