Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Anyone with half a brain would realise that sanctions on Russia will impact everyone else. It's not like Starmer's some kind of sage.
More of an onion, really.

I'm here all week, tip your waitress.

In other news: a Ukrainian pilot seems to have defected to Romania:

In the West we only think a maximum of five years into the future until the next election. No reason to think past that if you're not going to win the election. In countries like Russia and China they have the luxury of thinking decades into the future because they know they'll still be there to reap the benefits. For example China is by far the largest manufacturer of renewable energy, more than double the US. We make flimsy promises about targets in 2050 without actually doing anything to prepare for that future today because our politicians won't be around to benefit.

The fact that Putin has attacked the entire country and not just the Donbas region suggests he's been planning for all eventualities for a very long time and is confident he can ride out whatever storm is coming his way from Western actions. Russia has built up enough foreign reserves from its oil and gas exports and has a more than willing buyer in China to continue selling if it can't sell to Europe. But he's also spent his time creating a political environment in which he can get away with this invasion.

Encouraging Trump's election divided US society and drove a wedge between NATO members. Russian money has been buying up the British government and encouraging Brexit left the UK without a world voice (Truss was laughed out of Moscow) and divided the EU. The sanctions that would be necessary against Russia will also badly affect Western economies (no oil and gas for the EU, for example) and considering the polarisation of society that currently exists, which leaders will be willing to make sacrifices to their own economies when they think about the next election that is coming up?

Not sure why anyone would be surprised to find Germany trying to resist going that far, given their economic and energy ties to Russia.

Not that I would like to predict to what extent Germany will cave in to pressure to go much further than they've been willing to so far. They already budged when it came to Nord Stream 2.

I wonder if it is true, I hope it is true!
Lost the original tweet when I logged in for some reason;

"Ukraine’s ambassador to the US just told us that a Russian platoon from the 74th Motorized Brigade has surrendered to Ukraine’s forces. She says that the Russian troops apparently had been unaware they were being sent to kill Ukrainians.
No confirmation yet from Russia’s military"

I'm afraid it smells like typical war propaganda.

The ambassador certainly said it, her speech to reporters was covered on Sky news when I briefly tuned in earlier.

Cyprus, a country with less than a million people, is blocking this sanction?!!! How have they got that power?

From here. Whether it's true or not is a different question.

While the idea of the Russian military saying "hang on a second, fuck this for a laugh" and giving up is a nice one, it seems rather unlikely.
Apparently during the first Chechen war, it was a regular thing for hordes of grannies to turn up at army barracks to rescue their grandsons, at least if my memory is correct. That was before twenty years of chauvinist propaganda and manipulation, mind.

They're nazis
They are indeed.

And these are Russian Nazis:

So what's your point?

Listening to Kier Starmer posturing live in the Commons. Piss poor presentation. He sounds like a half arsed teaching assistant reading a story for 6 year olds. I’ve only met 1 person who talks positively about him.

That’s a decent analysis and position.
I think it is usefully critical of the NATO and American and allies position which creates some balance especially amongst the sudden shift on the left to supporting , and in some cases cheerleading, those organisations. I don’t agree with the invasion of Ukrainian by the Russians and I haven’t seen if they’ve released any statement since the invasion .

It has lots of Russian connections, Russian money and Russians living there.
It was the case 10 years ago. I lived out there a bit and saw it change dramatically. A lot of casino's and strip clubs opened up. No doubt there was more underground but not a world I sought.

The daughters of a guy I did business with said that it was 'acceptable' for married Cypriot men (including their father) to have a Russian mistress. Most brought expo flats for said mistresses and nothing was said.

Cyprus let any Russian who purchased a property was immediately granted citizenship. As I recall that included their families and such.

Cyprus has a long and deserved reputation for tax dodging.
