Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Johnson thought it was fucking playtime when his overweening ambition succeeded. First the twat nearly died as the economy tanked thanks to their ignoring of all the warnings about the potency of such things. And now this. It just isn't what he signed up for...

Possible heart attack on the way for the fat overgrown teenager.

oh stop he been playing cosplay Churchill for years

Carrie. be getting it hard atm

Mad depends on your leadership.
I wouldnt want to be be too complacent about the madness of MAD always holding in full, but even regimes which are painted as being batshit crazy have many underlying rationales and internal logic to them, and it is not usually considered to be in the interests of the powerful to have populations and territory being nuked.

Fears about the world eventually ending up going over the brink on this are more about how continual escalations and provocations could gradually lead us to a point of no return, rather than a single 'insane leader and regime' carrying us all the way there on their own in a single step. Countries and blocks that are prepared to call each others bluff when it comes to limited conventional conflicts do not take the same approach when it comes to the spectre of nuclear holocaust. I never say never about anything, but much would have to change before I would speak seriously about the threat of nuclear war. MAD is crazy but it sort of works, and if that ever changes this should become well evident some time before the triggering events.

Saw his pointless speech to us the British public, no mention at all of sanctions that might hurt the UK in any way, silly vacuous speech not going to be seen as threatening or reassuring to anyone.

He did mention sanctions. His speech was almost identical to Stoltenburgh's and delivered a few minutes afterwards so there's obviously some coordination going on.

Seems like it's just being set up now, so hard to verify much, but this seems like a decent project:
I think Dresden ABC are involved, not sure about much else though - fwiw, their self-description seems to be:
"Hello! We are supporters of horizontal society, solidarity and cooperation from different cities of Ukraine. Today we have united in the volunteer project "Operation Solidarity" in order to jointly help all healthy forces of society to counteract imperialist aggression against our country. We plan to collect humanitarian aid and fundraising in favor of territorial defense fighters and in support of all grassroots initiatives that unite people in confronting a common threat. We also plan to help refugees, host social events and spread the practices of equal decision-making and direct democracy.

You can help us by sharing info, making events and demos at your cities, sending money [long donation details follow]"

Genuine-seeming afaict appeal for the Jewish community of Odessa:

There's also another fund for the Jewish community of Ukraine here:

Not saying that these particular funds are more deserving than any others, just that they're ones I've come across today. And I'm fairly sure that they're not a front for neo-nazis, although the Russia Today crowd might suggest otherwise.

It looks like Antonov Airport near Kyev is in the process of being attacked/taken by Russian helicopter delivered airborne forces - wouldn't be surprised if heavier forces are brought in by heavy airlift aircraft, and that Russian Armoured forces coming from the north link up with them.

I would surprised if Kyev is not encircled in 24/48 hours.

I still take the view that actually moving into the cities is going to be hard, but in terms of the wide open spaces, Ukrainian territorial defence has folded - but it's important to to understand that that is probably the plan.
From my (very) limited knowledge of the situation, that sounds sensible. Destroy the Ukranian defence systems without getting into the messy stuff + take the infrastructure and encircle key targets. If the end game is some mix of absorbtion of the rebel held areas and installation of a puppet regime, they probably want to avoid mass casualties. Well, that's the most hopeful thing I can think of in this shitshow. :(

Johnson also said that Putin is turning Russia into a pariah state. Kettle/black.
