Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

A bit late but can anyone recommend any decent books on Putin, the general post 90s WTF is going on with Russia thing? I've read From Cold War to Hot Peace by Michael McFaul which was informative from the diplomatic angle.

It looks like Antonov Airport near Kyev is in the process of being attacked/taken by Russian helicopter delivered airborne forces - wouldn't be surprised if heavier forces are brought in by heavy airlift aircraft, and that Russian Armoured forces coming from the north link up with them.

I would surprised if Kyev is not encircled in 24/48 hours.

I still take the view that actually moving into the cities is going to be hard, but in terms of the wide open spaces, Ukrainian territorial defence has folded - but it's important to to understand that that is probably the plan.

From that Meduza rolling update page:
More than 140 municipal deputies from cities across Russia have signed an open statement condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “This is an unparalleled atrocity for which there is no and cannot be any justification,” reads the text.
Tiny few I imagine but fair play to them. Also says Czech premier, previously seen as warmer to Russia, has condemned it in really strong terms and called for concrete resistance.

Not particularly informed about this situation but surely the US could just go and sort this shit out with the biggest military in the world at their disposal? I get Ukraine is not a NATO nation which makes it legally wrong but given Putin doesn't give a fuck about international law why should the 'West'?

Well there is this thing called the nuclear deterrent which takes many options off the table and leaves us with the spectacle of the wiggle room for conventional war being restricted and deformed. Mutually assured destruction clearly still leaves room for certain 'lesser conflicts' to occur, but with red lines neither side will cross being scribbled all over the place.

“Yeah, we’ve got this nasty fire here, surely if we pour a fuckton of oil on it, the fire’s going to go out?”

eta that’s not a helpful response, sorry.

Johnson thought it was fucking playtime when his overweening ambition succeeded. First the twat nearly died as the economy tanked thanks to their ignoring of all the warnings about the potency of such things. And now this. It just isn't what he signed up for...

Possible heart attack on the way for the fat overgrown teenager.
