Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Anyone see this? https://www.channel4.com/programmes/falklands-war-the-untold-story/on-demand/72469-001 Some of the British senior officers were as hopeless as the Russian army is today. No exaggeration to say that we would have lost if we hadn't had help from Pinochet.
Your comparison might hold up rather better if you said the people who invaded the Falklands were hopeless. The British in your scenario cast in the role of Ukrainians against galtieri's putin

This article writes about some of the Ukrainian activities which were involved in the long, stalled convoy north of Kyiv. I guess we'll find more and more out about how various things got done over time...

Incredible stuff

“The first echelon of the Russian force was stuck without heat, without oil, without bombs and without gas. And it all happened because of the work of 30 people,” Honchar said.

In its early days, the unit used commercial surveillance drones, but its team of engineers, software designers and drone enthusiasts later developed their own designs.

They built a range of surveillance drones, as well as large 1.5-metre eight-rotor machines capable of dropping bombs and rocket-propelled anti-tank grenades, and created a system called Delta, a network of sensors along the frontlines that fed into a digital map so commanders could see enemy movements as they happened. It now uses the Starlink satellite system, supplied by Elon Musk, to feed live data to Ukrainian artillery units, allowing them to zero in on Russian targets.

The unit was disbanded in 2019 by the then defence minister, but it was hastily revived in October last year as the Russian invasion threat loomed.

Odd. Doesn't seem like it's being denied.

The billionaire Roman Abramovich and a Ukrainian peace negotiator suffered symptoms consistent with poisoning earlier this month, according a source with direct knowledge of the incident.

Abramovich was taking part in informal peace negotiations in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early in March when he began to feel ill, the source told the Guardian. Ukrainian MP Rustem Umerov was also part of the negotiation, and the men later left Ukraine for Poland, and then flew to Istanbul, where they received medical treatment.

“It was during his first trip to Kyiv. Roman lost his sight for several hours. In Turkey, they were treated in a clinic, together with Rustem,” said the source.

The account backs up the claims of a potential poisoning first reported in the Wall Street Journal and by the investigative journalism outlet Bellingcat.

“Bellingcat can confirm that three members of the delegation attending the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia on the night of 3 to 4 March 2022 experienced symptoms consistent with poisoning with chemical weapons. One of victims was Russian entrepreneur Roman Abramovich,” wrote the outlet in a tweet.

Bellingcat said the symptoms included eye and skin inflammation, and piercing pain in the eyes.

“The three men experiencing the symptoms consumed only chocolate and water in the hours before the symptoms appeared. A fourth member of the team who also consumed these did not experience symptoms,” wrote Bellingcat, which said one of its investigators had been asked to provide an opinion on the incident by chemical weapons specialists.

Based on remote and on-site examinations, the experts concluded that the symptoms are most likely the result of international poisoning with an undefined chemical weapon,” said Bellingcat,

Abramovich’s condition improved and he later returned to Kyiv to take part in another round of negotiations, said the source.

A fourth round of negotiations between official Russian and Ukrainian delegations is due to begin in Istanbul on Tuesday.

Asked for comment A spokesperson for the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said: “There is a lot of speculation at the moment, and we recommend to only follow official information.”

Not watched the program but aware of what content would be. (I once had the privilige of working with a FCO types that got gonged for their work in Chile). Russia, even at the time didn't think it could have done what UK did with regarrds Falklands. Part of the reason Thatcher was the top table intermediary between US CCCP
Have a watch, see if there's new information. Thatcher or her advisors get the blame for the Goose Green battle, which was done for PR reasons and had no military value.

A still unsolved mystery is why Atlantic Conveyor was ordered close to the Falklands in daylight. Nearly all the rations and tents were lost. Some soldiers went without food for 3 days. Had they spent much longer on the islands, some would have died of exposure.

There are lots of other WTF moments. Astonishing incompetence from Tony Wilson, which resulted in lots of deaths and almost lost the war. More cluelessness by whoever was running things at Northwood and by Jeremy Moore. You don't often hear the top officers being slagged off that badly. I'm sure the programme has made quite an impression with the people in the military currently. If not for some frankly moronic decisions, the campaign could have been won a lot sooner, with far fewer casualties. Having said that, if not for Pinochet we would definitely have lost.

Bellingcat: an MI6 effluent pipe...

Bellingcat: an MI6 effluent pipe...

There I was thinking you'd left your madder warbling days behind you. I'd ask for any evidence of that, but it'd be like asking a flat earther for evidence for their claims. Bet you'll probably say something to me like 'your cards are marked now you State asset'. Fuck off back to your weird little conspiracy obsessed world you crack smoking fruitbat.

Interesting that Roman (I'm not connected to the Russian government, honest) Abramovich is part of the official peace talks.

This I think was a fair bit earlier in the process <checks> 3/4 March. Don't think he's involved now...

There's so much out there that I don't know what to believe. I've read accounts that Zelensky asked him to be involved, that Zelensky asked the Yanks to not impose or at least delay imposing sanctions on him due to him answering that request, and that Zelensky had inferred that Abramovitch was willing to help build back the Ukrainian economy.

No, he's still involved. He's actually in talks at this moment in Istanbul according to Sky.

Although they've been advised not to eat, drink or touch any surfaces. Which will make things a little awkward.
There are several sets of talks going on, according to BBC.

I'm not so cynical about his involvement. His kids have all been brought up here in the UK and I know at least one is openly critical of Putin. People change.

The Russians really are creative with this shit. That guy's underpants, Salisbury, tea at the Ritz and now chocolates.. It's almost funny.

A representative for Abramovich confirmed yesterday the oligarch had suffered the reported symptoms after eating chocolate and drinking water but refused to give any further details.

Interesting video on what happens to frozen assets from finance professor at King's:

TL: DW

Needs to be proven that a) there was a crime b) asset was connected to that crime and c) ownership in order for them to be permanently seized. Very complex legally (obviously). Russian oligarchs very, very used to asset protection. Also discusses loopholes in proposed UK bill. Sale of Chelsea at no gain will allow the club to function normally, whereas otherwise has substantial restrictions to it.

Guess: Back channel talks about divesting an important cultural asset in exchange for favourable treatment in future (could have held club effectively to ransom? not been keeping up with this aspect). From the most cynical POV cleaning up his image, banking on future unfreezing of assets (as well as presumably numerous unsanctioned assets)... Probably not going back to Russia anytime soon, but he's got Israeli citizenship (and Portuguese). That said, clearly he has taken some physical risks here too.
