Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Well they are worried...

Lithuania’s president Gitanes Nausėda is to ask Nato for security consultations, reports Reuters.

Lithuania wants to invoke the defence alliance’s article 4, which allows any Nato country to ask for talks on an issue of concern, “especially related to the security of a member country”. The article has been invoked several times since Nato was founded in 1949.

Anyone know much about this lot? They seem to be an independent Russian/English language source and their feed reports stuff earlier than I see elsewhere: Invasion Following an announcement from Putin, Russia’s military begins attacks against targets inside Ukraine, and separatists launch an offensive in the Donbas — Meduza
Yeah, think they're like Russian liberals? The only story of theirs I've ever really paid much attention to is one on the darker/more complicated sides of a certain high-profile Russian state repression case, but I don't think they were publishing it to smear dissidents or anything, it was just that situation was genuinely fucked up and messy and they wanted to tell the truth as best as possible.
Russian government doesn't seem to like them too much:

Also, lone protester out in Moscow today:

Can't see it acheiving anything, but still, brave fucker.

So he's recognised the two 'separatist' regions as legitimate, claimed they've asked Russia for help against the 'genocide' Ukraine has been subjecting them to and used that as a pretext for the invasion?

By the looks of it that ranty speech, the security council meeting and the declaration of war were all pre recorded on the same day too. No wonder they were all shitting themselves in that meeting. He's not even trying to make a case is he? It's I'm doing it, here's my reasons and I don't give a fuck if you believe me or not.

I am genuinely surprised about it being a full on invasion. Not sure whether Putin will actually risk a proper occupation though or just give them a good thrashing for 5 days like Georgia.

I suspect an element of this is not wanting to back down, having built up so many troops etc.

As ever its the typical Russian strategy of buffer zones and semi controlled territory against hostile aggressors. Hell of a price to pay economically though.

I was in two minds as to if he would go in piece by piece, or full on, but because of the positioning of the troops, I thought the odds were it would be like this.
Full scale is better for a quicker defeat. It disorients the enemy and lessens the cost in money and losses. And Ukraine has shit for air defenses.

Not an invasion bro yet . ETA, if he does breach the Donbas, then yep, it’s an invasion
Of course it’s an invasion. The invasion tactic is to declare that a piece of the country you are invading has split off, so your invasion is not really an invasion of the country, just an invasion of the bit of the country you are now choosing to declare is not that really country. But that doesn’t change anything. Just because Putin says these places are not Ukraine, doesn’t mean he’s right. He’s invaded Ukraine. Unless, for some reason, you agree that these supposed “independent” states are not actually part of Ukraine?

There were quite a lot of twitter leftists, including Jacobin magazine, boldly declaring that the idea Russia was about to invade was trumped-up Western hype. Including alleged analysis of how many troops he had there vs how many he'd need to invade Ukraine. I wonder if they will have a moment of humility.
