Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Really easily, Churchill was a pure cunt. I think he said something like fascism was the best way to stamp out Bolshevism or something along those lines one time.
Don't want to derail the thread but yes, Churchill, like much of the Briitsh ruling class was pro-fascist (which is why they didn't intervene in Spain - unlike Hitler and Mussolini). The war was not an anti-fascist crusade for them, it was merely about protecting the interests of the British Empire and capital - dealing with a competitor that was perceived to have got too big for it's boots- the Axis Powers. And it's obvious why supporting the British ruling class and it's empire is anti-working class and why opposing them was pro-working class and anti-fascist.

Why do I have to explain this?

Correct. Anti fascism was promoted mainly to get the proles on board. The British government/boss class didn't give a fuck until that nice Mr Hitler meddled with their business interests.

Pete Grafton's book is a good oral history of mainly working class attitudes to WW2: YOU,YOU & YOU! Restored NOW ONLINE

Yes, Churchill also praised Mussolini and Hitler and even blamed the victims of the holocaust for their own predicament. I think he only changed his position towards the axis in late 1938.

That's all very great, but what if the interests of the State overlaps with those of the working class at times? As arguably it does in Ukraine and did in WW2.
If the interests of the state overlap with those of the working class then why didn't the British state/ruling class intervene in Spain ?

Different situation entirely. I obviously don't think they always overlap, it's rare, but...

That's not how I see things

Fair enough. So no overlap at all in the interests of the Ukrainian State and the Ukrainian working class in defeating Putin and preventing an occupation? Their interests in that are completely opposed?

TBH, I think what's going on is pretty complicated and unknown, and throws lots of shibboleths for lots of people into disarray (or at least should) so I'm wary of the same simplistic positions that people have been bringing out for decades. (Also aware of the danger of throwing everything out and the 'it's all new and different now' kinda position as well.)

I don't think acknowledging that would clash with yer opposition to states in general, for my part in this massive derail.

Yes they kind of have the same interests there, though how that plays out can be problematic, but I wouldn't say they have the same interests overall and do not agree with supporting the Ukrainian state or holding up Zelensky as some kind of great dude either :

Not that I would support a 'less corrupt' politician.
