On the afternoon of March 8, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a video summit with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Scholz in Beijing.
Xi Jinping pointed out that in today's world, a century of changes and the epidemic of the century are intertwined, bringing many global challenges and requiring global cooperation. China and the EU share many common languages in seeking peace, development and cooperation. We must take responsibility and inject more stability and certainty into the turbulent and changing world. The two sides should strengthen dialogue, adhere to cooperation, and promote the steady and long-term development of China-EU relations. China's development will bring more space for China-EU cooperation. The two sides should continue to deepen green and digital partnerships and practical cooperation in various fields based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win results. The two sides should continue to adhere to multilateralism and advance major global agendas.
Macron and Scholz expressed their congratulations on China's successful hosting of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The world today faces many challenges, and fighting alone will only make the situation worse. The EU attaches importance to China's important and positive role in world affairs, and is willing to work closely with China to jointly address major global challenges such as climate change and public health. The EU side is willing to work with the Chinese side to successfully hold the EU-China leaders' meeting and promote the constant development of France-China, Germany-China and EU-China relations.
The two sides exchanged views on the current situation in Ukraine.
Macron and Scholz introduced their views and positions on the current situation in Ukraine, saying that Europe is facing the most serious crisis since World War II, and France and Germany support solving the problem through negotiation, giving peace a chance. Thanks to China for putting forward the humanitarian situation initiative, and willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China, encourage peace and promote talks, so as to avoid further escalation of the situation and a more serious humanitarian crisis.
Xi Jinping stressed that the current situation in Ukraine is worrying, and China deeply deplores the renewed war on the European continent. China maintains that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be abided by, the legitimate security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of crises should be supported. The priority is to avoid tensions from escalating, or even getting out of control. China appreciates the efforts of France and Germany to mediate the situation in Ukraine, and is willing to maintain communication and coordination with France, Germany and the EU, and play an active role with the international community according to the needs of all parties concerned.
Xi Jinping stressed that we should jointly support the Russia-Ukraine peace talks, promote the two sides to maintain the momentum of the negotiations, overcome difficulties and continue the talks to reach results and peace. We would like to call for maximum restraint to prevent a large-scale humanitarian crisis. China has put forward a six-point initiative on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, and is willing to provide further humanitarian aid to Ukraine. We need to work together to reduce the negative impact of the crisis. Relevant sanctions will have an impact on the stability of global finance, energy, transportation, and supply chains, and will drag down the world economy, which is under the heavy burden of the epidemic, and will be detrimental to all parties. We must actively advocate a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept. China supports France and Germany to proceed from Europe's own interests, consider Europe's lasting security, adhere to strategic independence, and promote the building of a balanced, effective and sustainable European security framework. China is also happy to see the equal dialogue between Europe, Russia, the United States and NATO.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Ding Xuexiang, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
