Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Sure. The point is the west is much more enthusiastic about fighting this war than the Ukrainians who are forced by law to join up. Yet western supporters ignore the frantic efforts to avoid going to the front and urge the war to continue. Essentially I am taking aim at warmongers who scorn negotiations and call for more war but at no risk to themselves.
But you aren’t showing there is a lack of “enthusiasm” for it*. You’re showing that there is some proportion of the population that are unwilling to comply with the collective. And it would be truly amazing if that wasn’t the case. Do you have any information about how big that proportion actually is? 1%? 10%? 50%? The story is very different in each case.

*A poor choice of words. Nobody is enthusiastic to fight. What we’re talking about here is a willingness to fight, not enthusiasm

If only we could wish away all the worlds problems eh.

tbf they started the war they could always end it and if you think the capitulation of Ukraine and then Russia on the doorstep of NATO is going to stop the world problems you are very mistaken

best you can hope for in that situation is a new iron curtain but Putin not going to stop at Ukraine

out of interest when was that in your book?
IMO we have always been at war with EastAsia

I've seen some public Ukrainain polling on this carried out by a Ukrainian organisation- though worth remembering most of that polling will be taking place in Kiev and around, away from the front line, and also by people not actively fighting.

From what I remember I would summarise the polling as majority support for the war (70+% IIRC) but also growing and sizeable support for a mediated outcome and of course there's now more support for the (now banished) head of the ukrainian military who thinks the war is effectively lost/drawn/stuck/fucked over Zelensky

What proportion of the population are actively dodging the draft, and thus falling foul of the penalties that TopCat keeps quoting at us?

you can google this stuff you know

"Since the Russian invasion two years ago around 9,000 draft-evasion proceedings have been opened, according to the Ukrainian interior ministry, but that's just scratching the surface of the draft-dodging and the evasion of registration so enlistment notices can't be issued."

"The BBC recently reported that 650,000 Ukrainian men of fighting age have fled the country in the past two years, most slipping across its borders with Poland and Slovakia, some with false exemption papers allowing them to exit Ukraine despite a ban on fighting-age men leaving the country."

etc etc

Worth thinking how many people went AWOL from UK forces in the Iran and Afghanistan wars? single figures.
Getting away from the military state is not a simple matter. Joe Glentons case is fascinating reading. The army refused him the possibility to leave even when he went through the correct mental health channels

Further attacks on Kharkiv Oblast - two civilians known to have been killed, five injured:

Civilian casualties reported amid intense Russian attacks in Kharkiv Oblast

And a Russian attack on civilian infrastructure in Sumy Oblast has killed a woman and injured her granddaughter:

Russian attack on Sumy Oblast kills 64-year-old, injures her granddaughter

Russia attacked Sumy 302 times in 60 separate attacks throughout the day on May 9, the Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported.

Yeah, but Ukraine’s parliament has backed a bill that includes raising fines for anyone caught trying to avoid the call-up and allowing authorities to detain draft dodgers for up to three days. So you know, good people on both sides

Some people definitely are enthusiastic to fight.

As Captain Jack Aubrey observed: Nine tenths of war is boredom but that last hour... that last hour makes up for all.

They've also withdrawn consular services for men of fighting age abroad. So if your passport expires while not in Ukraine you are fucked.
