Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

This whole thing about "quick victory" is totally baffling tbh. Iraq took three weeks to fall in the most lopsided military conflict imaginable. The Afghanistan war took two months (and then 20 years). Those are "quick." I can't imagine Putin would have expected victory in less than a week in his wildest dreams unless he'd totally lost it.

However, unlike the US and Iraq, Russia and Belarus border Ukraine on 3 sides, and Kiev is only a 3 hour drive from the Belarussian border where Russian forces were massing.

Casualties are uncertain, I'm sure Ukraine is exaggerating how many casualties Russia has suffered, but its does seem like they are already far higher than the US suffered throughout the entire initial invasion, at least.

I don't know what to make of this, even without the garbled translation.
But it suggests that majority of Russian military commanders only found out a few days before the invasion what the plan was & were shocked and expressed worry about whether their troops would be willing to follow the orders.

It angers me seeing the working class late teens used as expendable first wave cannon fodder by Putin, wondering what the fuck is going on. Aside from snappy social media posts displaying big shiny metallic testicles, on the Ukrainian side it's the elderly and frail, the physically disabled, the mentally ill or those with learning difficulties who have no wide informal networks of support, no loved ones or neighbours looking out for them, alone, trapped in their homes by tanks and snipers, scared shitless that a shell or missile is going to hit them.

They will only have found out at the last minute because if you need to keep the world guessing about when or if you will invade you keep the number of people in the know very small.

That part at least is absolutely standard.

Same with reports of soldiers told they were being sent on training exercises. Well yeah if that is what you are trying to claim to the outside world you have to tell the soldiers the same.

I really think it is too early to say Putin has blown it, things are slow, not going to plan. War takes time and there are many twists in the road. I’m rooting for Ukraine but not hopeful yet.
Of course he hasn’t blown it. Nothing of the sort. Most of his forces haven’t broken a sweat yet and if he starts chucking these thermobaric rockets into the cities, it’ll likely all be over pretty quickly. The main hope has to be a revolt by the Russian military. They must have some sane commanders who think burning everyone in Kiev alive is a really bad idea.

He's blown it in terms of a snap victory leading to a political victory. Sure he can up the destruction but that it isn't going to lead to anything good for him.

No it won't though, depending on what you mean by 'over'.

Over in terms of the the city’s current resistance and Zelensky. Putin doesn’t even need to fight on the streets of Kiev. Those weapons will kill everyone for blocks no matter where they’re hiding. It’s merely a case of how much death and destruction he’s prepared to cause.

Liquor stores and bars in the US and Canada are targeting Russia’s national drink in a show of unity with the people of Ukraine. Shelves in both countries are being stripped of Russian vodka, with the Republican governor of New Hampshire, Chris Sununu, announcing on Saturday the removal of “Russian-made and Russian-branded spirits from our liquor and wine outlets until further notice”
