The Ashes 2023

Stokes clearly isn't anywhere near fit. Somehow he's got to play an epic tomorrow on one knee. Got to wonder how much longer he has in the game. :(

Weird day. Session 2, 98 per cent of the deliveries were short, average length in the bowler's own half. Both teams without a recognised spinner now and once the new ball is done, it's head theory all the way. Eight Neil Wagners. Strange match.

I thought this was well written.

Like this:

They still need six more to win, but then three of those bat below Stuart Broad

and this stat

Pope has played 10 innings against Australia now, with a top score of 42, which he made in the first innings here, and an average of 15. Whatever it is England’s management see in him that makes them believe he is the right man to take over the leadership of this team, you can be fairly sure that Starc and Cummins don’t share it.

I mean they keep the known cheats Warner and Smith in their side so why should anyone be surprised that Starc is also a cheating cunt?

It's not cheating, everyone saw what happened. Starc and McGrath just don't understand the law properly.

The most common version of that is someone jumping to take a catch, taking it cleanly but then landing on their arse and grounding the ball. Obviously not out.

Can anyone explain what the controversy is over the Starc non-catch? I genuinely can't see how anyone can claim it as a fair catch - it's not that I disagree with McGrath and co when they say it's a "disgrace", it's that I can't even see the argument they're trying to make.

I'd love for someone on comms to sit with McGrath and watch it back in slow motion, have him say "stop" at the point he thinks the catch is completed.

Happens quite often that players don't know the laws correctly. In this case, they're clear - you need to have both the ball and your body under control. McGrath has made an arse of himself I'm afraid. Should have it explained to him on air really to clear the air.

Duckett looks good. Better than the first innings. He's playing properly, not just riding his luck.

I don't think Starc was cheating btw. I think he genuinely thought he had it. And next time that happens, he'll make an effort not to steady himself with the ball like that. Cos now he knows.

What kind of professional cricketer doesn't know the rules of the game? It's not an obscure one either, if the ball's hit the ground and you've not got it under control then you've not caught it.

Today is already going better than I thought it would. I don't think there's enough batting left to even try and close out the game for a draw but I'll take a defeat with a couple of proper grown-up test batting performances at this point.

Well McGrath and Starc for two. It would have been cheating if there was an attempt to deceive but that wasn’t the case. They just thought that the catch was complete when he controlled the ball but that’s not enough. The body has to be controlled too. McGrath clearly didn’t get that because he argued about it at quite some length, making himself look a knob.

Was shitty, alright...but Bairstow was dumb.

Totally. But Bairstow should know better that that. If he thought Australia wouldn’t take advantage of an opportunity like that then he’s an idiot. I have no doubt England would’ve done the same given half a chance.

England have been so short sighted in this test series. Australia have capitalised on it. It was out. No question about it.
