The Ashes 2023

That Duckett stat is crazy. An opener who has only left 12 balls in his 24 innings. But yet he's sneakily averaging 45.

It's an astonishing stat. However, I don't think Ben Duckett is a genius who is about to redefine opening the batting. He's made runs on slow, flat wickets in Pakistan and against slow, flat bowlers v Ireland. Better bowlers and more challenging surfaces will find him out if he continues that way.

Been busy all morning so was hoping to check in and see Australia all out for under 400 and England 60 for none - and it turns out that's not too far off.

I dunno. He's done it against some quality attacks. It's an interesting approach. Absolute opposite to the received wisdom, but hey it's been 24 innings so not exactly a fluke by now. I like it. 45 for any opener is top notch.

Didn't see that (Crawley dismissal) as I'm listening on the radio. Still, sounded like a fucking silly shot. Rank bad decision making.

He actually played a very good innings. When he bats well he's possibly the best strokemaker beside Root in the side. I'm coming around.

48 is a decent contribution isn't it, without being world shattering. Fair play to him he's contributed in both games now which is more than a lot of us expected. Neither are the sort of innings to make up for another string of successive single figure scores again though.

5 an over, near enough. It doesn't particularly feel like crash bang wallop Bazball either, just really positive Test match batting.

Cometh the hour, cometh the part time leg spin of Steve Smith. Come on Pat Cummins, you know you want to.

Watching the highlights, I hadn't quite realised what happened in that last session. England threw away three wickets and were lucky not to throw away four. I guess you could say that Stokes' method against the short stuff might keep him in but doesn't produce many runs, but as it happens, taking on the short stuff all the time is about as effective as charging Lyon - not very.

It's amazing how often the tactic works. Neil Wagner is the one who really started this particular tactic off, and he could go ten overs on the spin digging it in. With none of the balls going anywhere near the stumps, it's relatively easy not to get out. But time and again, batters end up failing to resist.

Makes me think of Steve Waugh. He was a compulsive hooker and not bad at it, but he sat down and worked out how many runs he was getting per wicket, made the decision never to hook again, and stuck to it.

I'm surprised there's little discussion in the media (or here) about the 3rd umpires decision on Smiths catch for Root.
Looked obvious in the review replays that the ball touched the ground first and this picture released immediately afterwards on the BBC OBO page confirms, yet no uproar:hmm:

Didn't a similar situation happen at Edgebasten with Smith, celebrating a catch only for the review to show it was ground first?

I'm not trying to imply he's a cheat or anything

The next test is in 3 days and Oz does not have many bowlers in their squad. If they just played low risk and put miles in the bowlers legs, Headingley would be hard work, especially without Lyon.

Stokes better get on the phone to the Yorkshire groundsman and request a dust bowl. Then play both Rehan and Mo. Australia only have Todd Murphy and part time spinners.

I thought it was out. What you can't see from that pic is that the knuckle of his left hand is also underneath the ball from behind.

Murphy's not bad. Matched Lyon when Aus toured Pakistan.

Anyhow, I don't think Leeds does dustbowls. :D
