The Ashes 2017-18

Just a thought, despite England's awful batting, isn't par score for 1st innings in D/N at adelaide around 250-270? So England only 30 or so runs short of that. Worth remembering England's bowling was not good enough too, especially that first spell with the new ball.

Not sure you can really come up with a par score of three games. And the groundskeeper has being trying to make the wicket less bowler friendly.

Though you're right that the bowling wasn't good enough too.

Well, true.

Ball is swinging.. Need to get 4-5 down really quick

Bloody Vaughan and his obsession with pace.

Liam Plunkett is a very good white ball cricketer, but his red ball record is not great, averages 31.5. And he only bowled 43 overs (in 2 matches) for Yorkshire last year.

Yes it would be great if England had a top pace bowler, but they don't. Picking someone just because they are fast leads to the crap like picking Boyd Rankin (who averaged 35 last year).

Ball doing something now and England bowling better. Be very nice if they could get one more before the end.

Steve Smith has given England a sniff of a chance by not enforcing the follow on, a bit of a negative move. Perhaps would have been better off going for the kill and killing off English morale.

If England can get the Aussies out for 100-120 and transfer that momentum and positive energy to their batting then they can still win this. It doesn't seem likely at the moment but it's possible.

Very exciting last session. Bonkers of Smith not to enforce the follow on - a bigger clanger than Root choosing to bowl first. Pitch it up tomorrow lads.

Indeed the last session was very interesting. I do think that Smith has played it a bit too safe and might have let England off the hook however if Paine and Marsh can get the Aussie lead to 400+ with 4 sessions to go they should still be in prime position for a win. England will need to bowl the Aussies out for at most 150 to give themselves a chance.

Normally I'm a fan of enforcing it, but I wouldn't have done this time. If England had been 50-4 at the end, the match would already be as good as over. But with a tiring Aus attack, they could have been 80-1 and getting themselves back into it. Enforcing the follow-on would have maximised the chances of a result, but probably increased the chance of England winning. Australia have been burned by that before, and when you're 1-0 up in the series with Perth up next, why would you take risks? As it is, Aus are still miles ahead in this match.

It was another bizarre decision by a captain in this match. The pink ball under lights is very tricky, as the stats since it came about show. They could have knocked over the english top order by stumps. Although the tail actually looks stronger these days than the top 6.

Enjoyed watching Overton bat. One of the commentators mentioned he batted 4 in the u19 world cup a few years ago. Looked very solid.

I love ( :hmm: ) the optimism of some in here. It's always "if we can just skittle them for nothing first thing and then maybe a random herd of elephants and a dinosaur flatten the pitch out for us..."

The hope is indeed a killer.

Totally unsurprising decision by Smith, 'it's the modern way' is, I believe, the phrase, even if common sense screamed twilight + new ball = England rolled over. Even so, Australia are massively, massively ahead and they'll be more ahead when the last six wickets don't capitulate as the Kookaburra does what a Kookaburra does.

Funny to think this all happened (last session) while I was breaking up fights and being called a cunt. I'd rather have been listening to the cricket. And Jim Maxwell. Who is indeed recovering from a stroke and is only just returning.

Australia to bat until dinner then get England 4 down? Probably. But there's always a chance of those elephants and dinosaurs.

Well, I'm stupid enough to have hope and be up to watch!!!

Where are these elephants? :D

If you aren't confident about scoring more runs than the other team after the end of two innings, that's an argument for NOT enforcing the follow on, because it's harder to bat on the fourth innings than the third.

The rationale for enforcing the follow on is that you will know what your target is, you know how many you need to score and how long you have to do it - really so a draw may be less likely.

I can't see that Australia losing wickets means the decision was wrong. If they can lose wickets on the third day, they can more easily lose them on the fifth.
