The Ashes 2017-18

Didn't sound like England got a lot of luck but then you don't win the toss, field, and ask to rely on luck.

Another bad day at the office.

If we’d picked up 2 more wickets the decision to bat might have seemed insightful but the ball didn’t do enough. Just because the conditions look good to bowl doesn’t necessarily mean we have the attack to take advantage. They’d be on 230/40 without the rain. Still, Steve Smith’s out.

I'd say it's about even at the moment with perhaps the Aussies slightly in front. England would have wanted to get a at least 7 wickets. If they can get a couple with the new ball tomorrow then that would be good. Wasn't easy to bat and might be even harder for England to bat.

9 overs to go, England could do with a few more wickets before close.

Handscome doesn't look convincing at all.

He looks more convincing than all of the English team aside from root and cook. The Aussies know if they get those two cheaply it’s game over. The Aussies aren’t a two horse side.

It’s also worth noting that batting at night with the pink ball is very difficult so they did well to hang on.

I reckon he looked up and then ahead to the evening under lights and felt the batting was too frail to risk a collapse... Never mind its a good track

I really hope he didn't choose to bowl out of fear - partly because that would suggest the wrong mindset and partly because it would make no sense. If your batting is weak, you don't elect to bat last.

I think that it was genuinely an attempt to seize the advantage - but the bowling misfired.

Don't reckon it was fear. I didn't see or listen to it but from what I'm reading, England's bowling in the first hour was really poor.

That's very disappointing, of course. Not out of it yet, but England need a big day tomorrow. Get Aus for less than 350, preferable 300, and bat their socks off. Someone needs to play a blinder with the bat.

The short history of day-nighters at Adelaide doesn't look good. It shows that 250 is a decent score and 300 is a very good score. Six completed innings so far and only one of those over 300.

We'll probably have a better idea after both teams have had a bat. I still think the English batting is stronger overall than the Aussies. The Smith innings in the first test was the difference between the two sides and they might have gone on to lose the game. It was nip and tuck up to day 3.

I think a lot will depend on how effective the Aussie bowling attack for the England innings. If it's a good batting track and the English batsmen are able to assert themselves then they might be able to frustrate the bowlers and wear them out. They almost succeeded in doing this in the first test when the Aussies were starting to look a bit desperate and went a bit "bodyline".

Absurd decision by a captain who’s finding his feet. Refusing to bat at three is also bizarre. Some inventive field placements though.
I can understand to a degree his thinking, it's just that the team didn't really execute. The needed to hit the ground running but didn't really get into any rhythm until after the rain break.

Odd that England consistently bowled short during the Aus innings so far. That's on the ground with the narrowest square boundaries and longest straight boundaries. Not that we're going for a bundle mind you - a modest 2.5 an over or thereabouts.

They did improve after the break but really needed to be right on it from the first over and that didn't happen, which allowed the Aussies a bit of breathing space. Still early days, there may still be a few twists and changes in fortune/momentum to come. Nobody has dominated yet and neither both teams are still in with a good chance of winning.

Oh dear.. I think Root might be having a few sleepless nights over 'we'll have a bowl'!!

Going back to why i thought he might have chosen that, a bad day on day 1 with the bat would be series over, at least a bad day with the ball still gives them a chance and on the balance of things at the moment you'd have to say England are a walking bad day with the bat

Aggers has got very good eyes, said not out straight away when the BT Sport lot were getting excited...

England need to survive the night and try to find a way of boring the bowlers tomorrow morning. If they can manage to nullify the Aussie bowlers and get a first innings lead by tomorrow close with a quicker scoring rate then that would be a big morale booster.

Possible false dawn with a dodgy/early oz declaration? If we somehow see out this session unscathed, and start well tomorrow (a big ask) then Smith might be feeling a bit less sure of his decision.

 Vince

Cook and Root at the crease already so it falls to them straight away today

They've done really well, showing the top order how to stick in. Might just avoid the follow on thanks to them.

Awful wickets today, except Malan who got out to a good ball
