The Ashes 2017-18

Evens. 5-0 predictions looking challenging now.

I’d forgotten what it’s like to go to work bleary eyed after watching an Aussie test into the morning :(

Got to be pretty happy with that. I saw Cook was out early so was fearing the worst when I checked this morning and was pleasantly surprised. It looks pretty even but for a touring side trying to play yourself in and avoid getting totally smashed from the off you'd take that.

Flat pitch by all accounts. Not sure what the history of Brisbane is in terms of wearing, but it normally has far more pace than this. Guess the weather affected preparation, cos the last thing Aus want is a slow pitch. Survive the new ball tomorrow and 350+ should be on. Realistically, though, a team wouldn't be too displeased by 190-4 after losing the toss on a flat pitch - England didn't get away, and they've got a shiny new ball for the fresh bowlers tomorrow morning.

Can't get any streams to work at the moment. And pint-sized TMS is just stills.

May get more sleep as a result, but frustrating not being able to watch any of it.

It's a bit shit when you've got Moeen Ali coming in at 6. They're fucked unless Cook and Root and fire in the next innings.

Five test hundreds, average in the mid-30s, did very very well at number 5 in India last year. I've no problem with Moeen at 6. In fact if Ben Stokes didn't exist, I think he'd have played at 6 for most of his test career and might be averaging a little higher as a result.

It's still very very much in the balance - could be 250 all out or could push well past 300 towards 400. (Let's face it, which of us wouldn't have settled for 350 at the toss?) Too early to judge.

Stokes seems to have reactivated his social media after a long hiatus in recent days so presumably he's quite confident he's gonna be on a plane soon. Bowling practice on instagram and motivational message for the team on twitter. They're gonna need him.

The batting looks very very flimsy. Happy to be proven wrong. Stoneman and Vince played decently today but I don't think they can do it over 2 months.

I can't remember the last time the top order made runs without one of Cook or Root contributing. Certainly not last summer. Bairstow is probably the best no.7 in the world at the moment, so I don't agree about the flimsiness. I had a feeling Stoneman might come good, and while 50 isn't amazing, it's hugely encouraging. Vince, it has been said, looks a million dollars in county cricket, so his test failure so far has been a bit of a mystery. But some good players take time to get going - just look at Shai Hope in WI. Only a run-out stopped Vince's march to a hundred, and he played very well. Malan is still there fighting. Can't ask for much more when your big two manage just 17 runs between them.

Suddenly an awful lot appears to rest on Moeen's batting (because of the overnight score) and Moeen's bowling (because of how well Lyon bowled).

So come on YJB (because my predictions are often shite).

It's very hard to comment on something you haven't actually seen. Are there any highlights out there? From what I heard, Stoneman scratched around for his 50 (but was commended for doing so by Boycott) and Vince may well have flattered to deceive with an innings that is guaranteed to keep him in for the forseeable.

Glad it wasn't a disaster but from what I've read it could have been a lot worse all the same. Told you I'm a pessimist.

Malan's going to get a ton now isn't he.

Chuffed to find it's on BT Sport, I signed up when the America's Cup was on and had recently found myself thinking that was an expensive daft move, but now it all makes sense. Awesome :)

Ahem. Good for you. But you might not be so pleased when you hear Graeme Swann doing comedy Aussie accents while there’s actual cricket going on.

I’m picking up the Aussie feed instead. Can’t cope with that fucktard.

How do you get that? I have a geo thingy so might be able to pretend I'm in Australia

Aussie channel 9 is not streaming the cricket online sadly, so a VPN won't help you there.
hmmm but maybe it is possible to buy a suscription to cricket australia with the VPN? AUD$30 is getting into quite reasonable territory price wise for an entire series if it works..?

England letting it drift a bit in the second half of this session. Woakes not bowling to any plan, Ali bowling for too long.

I'm not really liking the BT Sport coverage. Sky had a bit more polish.
Mute the telly and listen on TMS.

Nicely poised at the close. England will want to end this partnership early tomorrow.
