The Ashes 2017-18

Its been mentioned on TV comms they are trying to get it to reverse. With the little bit of spin Ali got with that wicket, and he's bowled 17 overs as of now, most of them yesterday I think I don't understand that? Worth letting Malan have a go with his leg spin, or Root?

Re Willis/Botham... We so need a wonder moment.. Thinking of Broad that morning.. But who has ever done that in Aus

The loss of the last 6 wickets knocked the stuffing out of England and they haven't recovered from that. Could be on for an innings defeat here.

Root gives himself a go at last, all be it round the wicket to leg stump.. That's a defensive line isn't it?

Thinking of what else they could try? Have we got anyone that bowls a Colly Wobbler? There has been lots of talk about the seamers trying off cutters, how about that and Bairstow standing up? I know Prior had done that a few times to Anderson... God chuck the ball to Cook!!

Wake up, check score, 413 to our 403, great we’re still in this, then realise it’s 413/4, go back to sleep. Hopefully we’ll lose by less than an innings.

What changes should his 'imagination' have made?

I'm not wowed by Root's captaincy, I often think it's a little slow (keeping Woakes on when he's leaked runs off his first two overs) but he can't sweat blood from a stone. If fact, I'd say he had too much 'imagination' if anything, daft field positions rather sticking a third man in for example.

It’s not Root’s fault. And all this bollocks about Stokes making a massive difference is laughable. Cook hasn’t turned up at all, our mid-lower order might as well not have done, and every one of our bowlers are outclassed by every one of theirs. If we don’t manage to draw this it’s 5-0 because I reckon we’ll get stuffed in Melbourne and Sydney too.

On this track stokes could have bashed another 100 which would have tilted it closer to a draw. This is a pathetic England team.

Could being the operative word here. Moen should've smacked more than he did on this pitch but he didn't. Totally agree with your last sentence though.

It really isn't, it's not a great team but it's not a terrible one either. Most modern Test teams just aren't very good at playing away from home, if these two same teams were playing in England I'd back England to win the series.

Farbrace: "we think we played pretty well today"

"body language was pretty good":hmm:

Jesus  if that's the analysis what hope is there for improving

Oh give over. Ten wicket defeat first test, 120 run defeat the second test, on for an innings defeat in this test, no real stand out performances to write home about, collapsing on a pitch like this. I don't agree most teams aren't very good playing away, sure most lose but not like this.

Was quite amusing listening to Swann berating the senior England players for not providing enough guidance to the younger members. This is the same man who walked out half way through the last tour if I remember correctly.

Hang on, most of the Tests played in England this summer were extremely one-sided.

Good to see some cliché-free comments on here. All we need to do now is back ourselves, show good intent and bowl it in the right areas.

And well done to Flem for 'sidecar' and 'corridor of carnage'.

I still think if they push hard this is a team that can take 20 wickets in the remaining 2 days...and 2 Tests.

I'd agree - this is the poorest of Ashes lineups on either side I can remember witnessing.

The gulf isn't that enormous, Aussies have the flat fast straight tracks for their quicks, but most importantly the home side are 100% mentally focussed on crushing us. This is everything to them, has been since the pomnishambles. It's a perfect storm, even the press is 100% behind them. We are still a bit PTSD'd from the last visit too.

Over here they'd pipe down somewhat and wouldn't nearly have that wind in their sails. And (even) Broad would cause a twitter innings because, y'know, we have decent cricket wickets ;) .

They're holding their serve at home (albeit, emphatically, to love!). No dramas :hmm:

Some right fickle buggers, couple months (weeks) ago it was Root & Anderson are the great(est), anyone talking about whitewash is a gloom merchant - now the whitewash is nailed on and it's a pathetic side.

People are allowed to change their minds. Before the first test we could be reasonably optimistic. After the second everyone’s money would’ve been on Oz, and now you’d be a fucking idiot to bet on England winnng a match. That’s cricket.

There's changing your mind and there's being a weather cock, blowing whichever way the wind turns.

This isn't a pathetic team, it's got one of the top post-war English bowlers (still going strong overall), one of the three top post-war English opening batsman and an excellent, potentially truly great, upper-middle order batsman. It also has two very good lower order batsmen/allrounders, an excellent second bowler (although one probably past his best) and some seam bowlers that are very good in home conditions. That's not pathetic.
