Controversial nationalist monk Wirathu lambasted the UN’s special rapporteur for human rights in Burma, Yanghee Lee, in a speech on Friday at the Kyeikkasan Grounds in Rangoon’s Tamwe Township. He called her a “whore” for her alleged bias towards the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

“We have already made public our Race Protection Law, but without even studying it, this bitch [Burmese: kaungma] keeps on complaining about how it is against human rights!” he shouted to hundreds of supporters on Friday afternoon.

“Can this whore really be from a respectable family background?” he thundered, to which the audience responded, “No!”

“Don’t assume you are a respectable person, just because you have a position in the UN,” he continued. “In our country, you are just a whore....

This is actually a Cambodian child. As usual, it's important to take care with stuff like this - there are constant accusations that the international media is spreading falsehoods about the situation in Rakhine State, which feeds the notion that it's actually the Buddhist / Arakanese who are victims, which prevents any external investigation from doing its job properly, which fuels the hatred etc etc

The Global New Light of Myanmar, the English-language daily newspaper and government mouthpiece, ran a cover story today titled “False news in UK’s Daily Mail the latest in misinformation”.

Israel’s defense ministry rejected a call from human rights activists and lawyers in the country to suspend military exports to Burma.

Jerusalem-based human rights lawyer Eitay Mack told The Irrawaddy on Tuesday that the Israeli defense ministry said in a letter sent on Jan. 8 that it would go ahead with exports of military equipment to Burma as they were approved by the foreign ministry and stood within international law.

A prominent Muslim lawyer and legal adviser to the National League for Democracy was shot and killed at the Yangon airport yesterday afternoon, according to a senior member of the ruling party. Police believe the shooting was a targeted assassination. A taxi driver was also reportedly killed while trying to chase down the gunman

Thailand in corrupt shock?

Last time I was there a boatload of Rohingya managed to wash up on Thai shores. Their reward wasn't even imprisonment on a paradise island. The Thai police simply tied their hands, put them back in the boat and sent them out to sea again, this time without oars.

Westerners generally walk around Thailand with their eyes shut. Apart from the fat bastards from Rochdale who keep the sex industry going. I say 'sex industry'. Sex in Thailand relates to sexy as soap bar does to proper cannabis.

As for Aung San Suu Kyi. Oxford educated elite in inertia shock.
