Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

I think the 'left' is crediting the people around Trump with far too much competence to achieve their goals. Reasonable left, centrist and right governments are all massively incompetent at delivering large scale change. No reason to suppose the deranged second rates around Trump will do better. It's a mindset nowhere near as bad as wild conspiracy theories but it comes from the same place.

Will America become worse for people of color (sic) , LGBT people and women? yes, will they cut taxes massively for the 1%? hell yes. Will they build a fully functioning fascist state that will dominate the world order for 1000 years? fuck no.

I think the revolutionary left and (some) anarchists sometimes buy into a paradigm that the right are some kind of ultra efficient super beings (ironically something the hard right believe about themselves and 'business'). The reality is everyone is a bit shit. It's why we wanky reformists stay happy.

What happens if Trump dies/becomes incapacitated before the inauguration? Does Vance go straight in as president?

If Trump dies after the election is certified by Congress on Jan. 6, Vance becomes president, not sure what will happen if Trump dies between now and certification - some states require Electoral College electors to vote for the presidential candidate that got the most votes, so they'd probably quickly change their laws to allow them to vote for Vance, or elect Dead Don, who would be succeeded by Vance as soon as the election was certified

If it is after the elected electors meet in December for the formal vote, Vance goes straight inn, 20th amendment. If he dies before then.... it gets messy, various states say the vote stays with the team, so it would be Vance, but others allow the electors to vote for anyone they want. It has kinda happened once, but only to the defeated candidate, so Ulysses S Grant was still clearly and easily elected.

I really, really hope I’m wrong, but I fear this presidency may be cataclysmically bad. Not just bad as in, ‘he’ll implement bad policies’ but bad as in ‘he’ll fundamentally alter the culture and structure of government in ways that will have negative ramifications for generations, including a non-negligible risk of eroding democracy altogether’. His first term, in this respect, is also much worse than commonly thought given how much he altered the federal judiciary, but the second term will be on a different scale.

Trump rules over the GOP with an iron fist now and they are on the verge of taking both houses of congress. That will mean Trump has control of all three branches of government. The only non-Trumpist elements of government left will be the civil service and the administrative agencies. Project 2025 is about fully Trumpifying the former and largely abolishing the later. If that project is complete Trump will have close to the power of the king - don’t forget his ‘absolute immunity’ from criminal prosecution too. This is a man who is unhinged, vengeful and surrounded by rightwing fanatics. A man who has vowed to create a vast network of concentration camps for immigrants. A man who has vowed to ‘root out’ the ‘enemy within’. And there will be no guardrails. I don’t think the dangers of where this could go need to be spelled out.

All Americans who want to avert these dangers need to start thinking ‘what can I do to fight this?’ because one thing is obvious now - their democratic institutions will not do a damn thing to stop the fascist onslaught.
And in terms of the Republicans, who will soon have to start thinking about a candidate beyond 2028, the message is very much that they can win from the populist right. There really won't be any momentum within the party to return to any kind of traditional right positions. Unless, of course, the Trump reign ends in disaster and even then it would be very difficult to shift them back to the usual shite that the party is.

Bidden should wait till the Trumpers have produced loads of 47th merch and them stand down so Harris becomes the 47th president for a few weeks.

Then when they've created the Trump 48 merch, Harris should step down to torture House Speaker Mike Johnson by letting him have the presidency for a single day before it is whisked away

That... complexion... is a tad at odds with the 'beautiful white skin' he told his MAGAs he had. I call fake news on that VF cover. Yeah.

‘My beautiful white skin getting nice and tan’. Republican candidate Donald Trump says as president he’ll work hard to rescue the US economy from ‘obliteration’ even though it would have been easier to leave politics and relax on a beach at one of his oceanfront resorts.

Perhaps the democrats should storm the inauguration hearings and try and assassinate the vice president like during the January 6th protests … ah, hold on slight issue with that plan  :hmm:

Would be funny to see the reaction from all the Jan. 6, 2021 rioters who have been locked up for years and are likely to get pardons from Trump when Biden pardons the Jan. 6, 2025 rioters the next day

We all have a massive global party.

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than for that useless sack of orange flob to no longer exist.

Trump would undoubtedly consider them patriots and "very fine people"

Well this could be interesting. At the risk of sounding like a nut job, I don't trust the result, and how quickly it was called in a landslide. The previous day he was looking beaten, and there were rumblings that he was told he was going to lose with inside polls. There are apparently many missing votes and the bomb scares were all at Dem places.

If this guy thinks a fundraising email on behalf of Democrats seeking recounts in close down-ballot races is a sign Kamala Harris was cheated out of victory and there's still a chance she could win, Mike Lindell might have a pillow salesman job for him

BREAKING: Kamala's campaign says They can Overturn Trump's Election Victory with a Recount

The only recounts would be for close U.S. House/Senate elections.

Opposition leaders, not foreign powers.

As a private citizen he is in breach of The Logan Act

“The President alone has the power to speak or listen as a representative of the nation. He makes treaties with the advice and consent of the Senate, but he alone negotiates. Into the field of negotiation, the Senate cannot intrude; and Congress itself is powerless to invade it. As Marshall said in his great argument of March 7, 1800, in the House of Representatives, 'The President is the sole organ of the nation in its external relations, and its sole representative with foreign nations.'”

Am certain that it's the norm during transition. And also (to clarify) when in opposition they've met or called foreign leaders or their representatives.

Didn't Carter reach out to the DPRK at some stage, after being in office?

Trump issuing demands to his underlings via Twitter to let him skip constitutional oversight in exchange for giving them a leadership role in the party. They all obediently publicly declare ‘yes sir!’. Welcome to the New Crazy.

This Rick Scott guy, a front runner for leader of the senate - who has a net worth of hundreds of millions of dollars - sure sounds like a man after Trump’s heart. Via Wikipedia:

“Scott was pressured to resign as chief executive of Columbia/HCA in 1997. During his tenure as chief executive, the company defraudedMedicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs. The Department of Justice won 14 felony convictions against the company, which was fined $1.7 billion in what was at the time the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. history...

In August 2022, Business Insider found that Scott had violated the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012, a federal transparency and conflict-of-interest law that requires members of Congress to report certain types of financial transactions within 45 days, after Scott and his wife sold stock in Emida Corporation worth up to $450,000 in September 2021 and Scott did not report it until August 2022.”

This won’t go well, two big egos this close and using each other this much…

The falling out is going to be inevitable and hilarious - Musk might have spent $200 million on getting Trump elected, turned Xitter into an offshoot of the Trump campaign, and alienated tens of millions of potential Tesla buyers, but he still supported the DeSantis campaign early on and I don't think Trump's going to forget that any sooner than he'll make Michael Cohen attorney general
