Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

I guess all the political prisoners of January 6th will be pardoned and released.

Most of them have already served their sentences.

I do have to wonder how the Capital police feel about Trump's return. 150 of them were injured and a couple died within the week from stress-related causes. I can't imagine they're going to be happy about being called to protect him in the future. I look for a lot of resignations, and maybe a "slip" in the security.... It would be hilarious if they all quit en masse the day before the inauguration.

I don't think Vance would have won as definitely. I think Trump still has a certain cachet based on his past life as a businessman etc.

People do seem to be curious about Vance. My library stocks 6 copies of his book. They've been on a reserved list 6 people deep for months. I get multiple requests for it every week. I haven't read the whole thing, but what I have shocks me. People assume that he's from Appalachia, but it's his grandparents who left to start a new life. He pretty much throws his whole family under the bus. Why anyone from Appalachia would think he's "one of them" is beyond me.

That would be awkward... particularly as the inauguration will have the bigliest crowd ever.

In news that will no doubt shock all, Trump’s announced environmental secretary - Lee Zeldin - wants the US to pull out of the Paris Accords. Again.
Yeah, well, the moon landing, climate change, Covid vaccines, all hoaxes.

I'm actually hoping that Man City winning the treble was also fake news. :)

I'm shocked, shocked I tell ya .

Much as I'd love to see him inside - and even more so for his rapey ways - I'm not sure that putting him in prison now leads to anything good, with regard to Maga-loon riots and the rest. Maybe leaving the conviction on record but suspending sentence till he leaves the White House is best. It would at least force Trump to pardon himself. Anyway, regardless, he's got away with the hush money case and will do so with all the rest. :( I really can't remember the steps in the process and whether prosecutors were waiting for the Congressional hearings to finish, but there should have been time to convict him for the Jan 6 stuff over the last 4 years. At the most basic level, prosecuting authorities should have foreseen exactly this happening.

Yeah, the foot-dragging from Merrick Garland etc. was a huge mistake, they didn't even start investigating Trump's role in the Capitol riot for more than a year

A wariness about appearing partisan, institutional caution, and clashes over how much evidence was sufficient to investigate the actions of Trump and those around him all contributed to the slow pace. Garland and the deputy attorney general, Lisa Monaco, charted a cautious course aimed at restoring public trust in the department while some prosecutors below them chafed, feeling top officials were shying away from looking at evidence of potential crimes by Trump and those close to him, The Post found.

He can't pardon himself in state cases, only federal ones. However, we know they will go away. I hold Garland to blame for a lot of it, as he should have dealt with J6 and the Documents cases sooner. A convicted felon cannot be on the ballot, but here we are. He gets to skate on everything, although Fani in Georgia is determined to carry on in her state case. Realistically though, we know it will be doomed. Meadows got bad news again though, that the SC aren't helping him, and his attempt to move his case to federal court to get pardoned, didn't work. His minions may face accountability, but he won't.

Trump picks anti-LGBTQ+ governor Kristi Noem to be secretary of Homeland Security

Trump has, according to CNN on Tuesday (12 November), picked South Dakota governor Noem to run the department responsible for anti-terrorism, border and cyber security, immigration and disaster prevention.
She has been a vocal opponent of LGBTQ+ rights, describing marriage as “a special bond between a man and a woman”. Noem faced controversy earlier this year after she wrote in her memoir No Going Back that she had killed her “untrainable” 14-month-old dog Cricket.

Fucking hell, not her!

While I would agree, just like in other walks of life, I also imagine many of them won't think it's Trump that is the problem.

But yeah, for those who do, that's almost a second reason to get the fuck outta dodge. It's bad enough when your co-workers are Trump fans, but when they believe they're entitled to get their own way and have the righteous winds of 'the law' behind them. :(

Evangelical Christian Zionist Mike Huckabee - who back’s Israel’s settler movement and the annexation of the West Bank - will be the next US Ambassador to Israel. New Israeli ambassador to the US similarly extreme.
Oh ffs, I'd forgotten about him.

They're really going to make the last Tory government sane and competent, aren't th... ok, well, they're going to provide some perspective.

Trump now has his secretary of defense.

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, to serve as his secretary of defense.

“Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country,” Trump said in a Tuesday statement announcing the selection. “Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice - Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”

Hegseth has a long record in the military, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He has also acted as an informal adviser to Trump for a number of years while he was in and out of office, Trump advisers told CNN. While Hegseth was considered for a number of positions in Trump’s first administration, he was ultimately passed over, they said.

The president-elect is known to value how his message is delivered to television audiences, and the selection elevates the TV personality to a critical role in Trump’s second administration. Rep. Mike Waltz of Florida had been floated for the job, but Trump has since asked him to serve as his national security adviser.

We all know that Musk was going to be given a job in Trump's new cabinet. He was finally given a title - Department of Government Efficiency. This is new posting and Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will the two in charge.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is appointing Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new commission on cutting government spending and regulation, handing an enormous portfolio to the billionaire who gave political and financial support to his presidential bid.

In a statement, Trump said that Musk and Ramaswamy would be leading the “Department of Government Efficiency,” an idea championed by Musk. Trump said the department would operate outside of government, while partnering with the White House and its budget office to provide recommendations for overhauling federal operations. Musk has adopted the nickname “DOGE” for the commission, a reference to a meme-based cryptocurrency he also touted.

During the campaign, Musk called for the commission to find $2 trillion in cuts to the federal budget — a goal even some conservative budget analysts have panned as “absolutely absurd.”

Musk’s elevation to lead the commission comes despite concerns about his array of personal business interests with the federal government. His companies in the auto and space industries have grown through government contracts and subsidies, and he has long criticized government regulation of his firms. Musk has emerged as a key Trump ally during the presidential election, donating more than $118 million to Trump’s campaign.

Ramaswamy rose to prominence as a candidate in the 2024 GOP presidential primary. During that campaign, he embraced extreme cuts to the federal government — at one point calling for reducing the workforce by more than 75 percent.

The laughing billionaire, once more scything his way through the workers and getting rewarded for it.

A few days before the election, Trump was visiting Arab American communities in Michigan and winning support by saying he'd end the war in Gaza - I think the Huckabee appointment makes it clear what kind of end he has in mind

Huckabee has never supported a two-state compromise even when Netanyahu endorsed the idea in 2009.

Huckabee has never supported any solution that would require Israeli settlers to be uprooted.

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2015, Huckabee, then running for the GOP presidential nomination, said recognizing the West Bank as Israeli would be the “formal position” of his administration. He criticized Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza and described settlers evacuated by Israeli forces as having been “marched at gunpoint.”

“I feel that we have a responsibility to respect that this is land that has historically belonged to the Jews,” he said.

In May 2019, it was reported that Trump was considering pardoning several US military service members who had been charged with war crimes

Hegseth had for months sought to convince Trump to pardon these individuals. At the same time, Hegseth was discussing these cases on Fox News without disclosing that he had advised Trump to pardon them. In November 2019, Trump pardoned three service members accused or convicted of war crimes. Shortly before Trump announced his decision, Hegseth suggested that Trump was about to take "imminent action" in the cases.
