Myanmar (Burma) - news and discussion

She's lost another friend.

Suu Kyi 'lacks moral leadership'

Veteran US diplomat Bill Richardson has resigned from an international panel set up by Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to advise on the Rohingya crisis.

He claimed the panel was a "whitewash" and accused Ms Suu Kyi, his long-time friend, of lacking "moral leadership".

Myanmar said he should "review himself" over the "personal attack".

Mr Richardson added that Ms Suu Kyi had been "furious" when he raised the case of two Reuters reporters on trial in Myanmar.

Mr Richardson, a former adviser to the Clinton administration, has known Ms Suu Kyi for decades, and visited the Nobel laureate while she was under house arrest in the 1990s.

He told Reuters he was resigning from the advisory board because it was a "whitewash" and he did not want to be part of a "cheerleading squad for the government".

He was "alarmed by the lack of sincerity with which the critical issue of citizenship was discussed," he wrote in a statement.

Feet of clay and arse of weak

Everyone knows now it was ego not conviction
Silly cow

Not read into this much, but the impression I get is somewhere about the usual commerce-class struggle-for-freedom to trade against the unimaginative force-weilders in charge while stomping carefully on the heads of the poor/marginalised for purchase. Plus a long running Burmese ruling-class contempt for the 'Bangladeshis' and their Islam.

Aung San Suu Kyi - rarely has a once feted leader fallen from grace so quickly, so dramatically.

From Hero to Zero in a blink of an eye.

media and polticians still pussy footing around Aung San Suui - Its still all "she should have done more" "disappointing that she didn't use her moral authority" . Fuck that - shes a mass murdering genocidal racist and should be in the dock/strung up alongside the Myanma Military.

I've been to Myanmar, read the history, I'm sure the 'The Lady' could have handled this better for the image of Myanmar but I'm sure there was very little she was able to do. Her role is hard fought but tenuous to the ground troops committing atrocities. The military are in power, her hands are tied. Plus the majority are anti-muslim anyway.

The most important thing to know is that Myanmar has been secluded from the world for 50yrs and countless massacres have taken place under the military leadership. It's been in the longest running civil war on the planet. It's business as usual for them except now all of sudden the world is watching. Perhaps the first signs of this were Cyclone Nargis stories from '08. Why is the beautiful coast of southern Myanmar undeveloped near Thailand?? Why don't they want folks heading there?

I'm not defending her but trying to show a context sadly lacking in all the anti Ang SSK criticism.

even if a lack real authority prevents ASK stopping the military from it's brutality, if she was even remotely deserving of her past plaudits / reputation, and actually gave a fuck about the Rohinghya, she would have let the world know / gone into exile etc .

Fair point but I don't doubt for a minute her criticism of the military could be used as an excuse to attack or end the NLD's position of power in parliament surely? This is nuts me writing this, who knows what's really going on. I will investigate.....

Another idol turns out to have more than feet of clay shocker

This interview has come about because Bangladesh had a forced repatriation agreement they had reached with with Myanmar - currently suspended.

She was very popular with the liberati when she was under house arrest and the military ruled Myanmar but its easy to attract praise when you're not doing much but making statements and giving interviews. Her performance in office has been much less impressive and she seems to have been totally indifferent to the treatment of the Rohynga though I suppose we'll probably never know just how freedom to act she ever actually had.
She is apparently massively popular in Myanmar itself since the Rohynga are pariahs that no-one cares about. But I suspect there will be a lot less support internationally for her this time even if a few Govts including ours make the obligatory speech about respecting election results.

No one cares, it's gone from being a military dictatorship with the thinest veneer of civilian democracy - provided by someone with an extremely dodgy record when it comes to the condemnation of genocide - to just being a military dictatorship.

Other states care about the consequences of this, but no one actually gives a shit about this in itself.
