Fascists, Fascism and the Invasion.

A pretty extraordinary piece in Guardian about the Azov brigade that neglects any mention of their far-right ideology of the group bar this statement presented as a fact
The 5,000-plus strong brigade has shed any far-right associations, relentlessly emphasised in Russian pre-invasion propaganda, and is one of the military’s elite forces, comprised entirely of volunteers
Whatever the truth of this it warrants more of a focus than this puff piece provides.

It was a standout article. Azov are doing well, are democratic, have shed their far right ideology, are a role model.

Ukraine's first LGBT march since the invasion took place in Kyiv. It included soldiers who had been fighting at the front. Lasted for about twenty minutes. The leaders of the Pride march recommended participants to 'remove LGBT symbols' and exit separately through the metro to 'avoid provocations'

Counter demonstration included Right Sector and Centuria ( an Azov off spin in the Armed Forces) broke through police lines as Pride supporters were escorted by police into the underground.

A few weeks ago there was this:

I'll quote the thread so that people who aren't signed into twitter can read it:

A shameful attack from a the far right youth group took place in Odessa last Saturday, the attackers finally had to run away in front of the reaction from comrades.

[ Direct Action Independent Student Union telegram link (in Ukrainian)]

the far-right tried to disrupt the presentation of a zine organized by the independent student union Direct Action. They tried to break into the room where the presentation was taking place.

When they failed to do so, they stole one copy of the magazine and tried to burn it, which led to a fight. As a result, they sprayed gas on an activist of the Solidarity Collectives and two soldiers from the Ecological Platform who are now being treated in Odesa

We would like to express our support and solidarity for our friends and colleagues who fought back against the far right. Unfortunately, we have seen a number of attacks happening in recent months against feminists, LGBTQ people, student unions, etc.

These attacks were committed by far-right youth groups. Just as we have to fight an existential war against the authoritarian Russian regime that brings with it torture, oppression, repressive policies, homophobia, and violence of the so called "traditional values"

some political groups decided to wage an internal war for the very same reasons: authoritarian values, racism, and homophobia

Jake Hanrahan said this, also on twitter/X:

A neo-Nazi group in Ukraine (made up of youths who haven’t served) tried to attack a book event held by Ukrainian anarchists, many of whom are on rotation from fighting on the front. A wounded Ukrainian soldier attacked the fascists, using his crutches to hit them. They ran.

The Guardian left a lot out

Won’t see that reported on in the uk.
Busy fella Kukharchuk, he recently published a list of 'unpatriotic' Ukrainian journalists including Anna Kaliuzhna who has in fact provided a whole swathe of articles detailing Russian atrocities and giving media space to stories supporting Ukrainian Armed Forces including Azov. Kaliiuzhna then received death and rape threats. IPI - The Global Network for Independent Media group have taken up her case. Perhaps the Guardian will publish an article ?

'Farion, a linguist, became a member of the nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party in 2005 and was elected to parliament in 2012, but failed in subsequent attempts to win a seat. She had also served on Lviv regional council.

She gained notoriety for frequent campaigns to promote the Ukrainian language and discredit public officials who spoke Russian.'

'In the early months of the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Farion denounced Russian-speaking fighters of the Azov regiment who defended the port city of Mariupol for three months.

Although Ukrainian is the sole state language of Ukraine, many of its people speak Russian as a first language, a legacy of Soviet rule, when Ukrainian was under official pressure.

Promoting the language has long been an important issue, with parliament passing legislation to entrench its use in public life and in the services industry.'
