Fascists, Fascism and the Invasion.

There's a great tweet from Devina ( from Ukraine) with 16.5k supporters which includes the following :

This is simply a huge blow and an insult to the Ukrainian people. Such actions made Canada an enemy for Ukraine and I do not know how Canada will be able to wash away this shame! Another backstab from a former ally. Shame on you, Canada!
Ukrainians demand that the Ukrainian authorities summon the Canadian ambassador to Ukraine for an explanation or recall him from Ukraine altogether!

  • A coalition of Russians fighting for Ukraine has vowed to continue cross-border raids into Russia. The anti-Putin fighters held a press conference in Kyiv after carrying out armed attacks in Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk border regions. “It’s probably no exaggeration to say we’ve opened up a second front, taking full-scale military action into the enemy territory,” said Denis Nikitin, leader of one of the groups involved, the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK). The avowed nationalist nicknamed “White Rex” has links to the far right and football hooliganism.

From the Guardian.

Protesters in Kyiv are calling for the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war from the Azov brigade.

Relatives and friends of captured soldiers, some dressed in military clothing, waved placards at passing traffic.

At its inception in 2014, the Azov brigade included far-right volunteers, some with neo-Nazi affiliations. In recent years the brigade has been fully integrated into the Ukrainian military, though some have suggest fits far-right links and symbolism have remained.

Article on the neo Nazi RVC who want a white Russia

"The whole enterprise is a pet project of Kyrylo Budanov, the head of HUR. As the cross-border raids unfolded last month, Budanov praised the Russian paramilitaries as “good warriors” on a national newscast. “They’ve been helping us since the first day … They have fought in many of Ukraine’s hottest spots. We’re going to try and help them as much as we can,” he said."

"The raids are closely coordinated with the HUR, which provides logistical assistance, vets their operational plans and arms and pays them. "

Yeh but we all know the most obvious characteristic of good nazis

The growth of the far-right in Europe has been happenng for 30 years or more, but western liberals can now blame it on Putin and Russia generally instead of the multiple slow-burning crises in their own societies.

You can only laugh at this kind of thing. As if conservative and liberal governments, with the craven support of social democrats (where they weren't in office themselves) didn't 'undermine the principles of democracy' across Latin America, Africa and Asia throughout the cold war. When did Putin and Russia last induce a Pinochet-style right-wing military dictatorship in Europe?

'The growth in support and influence for the Putin-supporting far right across Europe, of which Slovakia is the latest country to fall victim, is a grave security risk to the continent. This coalition – which includes the Austrian Freedom party and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France – do not view Russia as the acute security risk it is, and are reluctant to support much-needed coordination with Nato on security and defence policy. In the short to medium term, this will leave the EU unable to coordinate essential support for Ukraine – a tragedy for the Ukrainian people. But also in the long term, it will leave European countries vulnerable to foreign hostile interference in all aspects of life – ultimately fundamentally undermining the principles of democracy.'

You have to wonder about these groups in Russia and Ukraine ( Canada as well) who insist on putting these things up or naming streets after Nazis and fascists
I think the oppresion of the USSR makes anyone who fought them or was considered bad by them automatically a good guy in some peoples eyes.

Think when the Russians rocked up and murdered people and turned their war dead into a fetish and memorials all over their colony's pissing off Russia must have some attraction

The Ukrainian nationalists who sided with the Nazis, joined the SS and who fought the USSR also slaughtered Poles and Jews. In fact they killed more Ukrainians than anyone else.
They also killed thousands of soldiers in the German army. The hundreds of thousands of ethnic Russians who fought for the Nazis were also pretty murderous. As was the Red Army and the Russian state. Before, during and after WW2. When it comes to it there is precious little point in trying to determine who was the blood thirstiest of participants in Eastern Europe during WW2 or with what motivations.

I agree, we should all stop naming streets after villains and fighters. Mammals, birds and dead poets are far better choices

Not sure how pointing out that the Bandera-ites killed more Ukrainians than they did anyone else is trying to determine who was the bloodiest tbh. In any case with hindsight I think a better reply from myself would have been to ask why and when did the revisionist school of thought on Bandera start and gain traction.

And what's more, Russian Nazis are probably worse than Ukrainian Nazis, seeing as they're Russian.

I am confused. Are you claiming that the Ukrainians who fought for the German Nazis also killed German soldiers? How did that happen?

There was a mass defection of Ukrainians within the German Auxiliary Police (a charming bunch of lads) to the UPA-B, with all their weapons, who went on to fight German and Russian forces (along with a bit of ethnic cleansing of Polish or Jewish civilians still in the area).

How many of them were previously UPA members who signed up to get access to the weapons is up for grabs, but it's generally considered that it was a conscious effort I believe.
