Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

A curious article in the WSJ where on the basis of a poll, that says 15% of veterans and serving soldiers would join an armed protest if Kyiv signed a peace treaty that they didn’t agree with, they randomly interview Andriy Biletskiy. Biletskiy. just happens to be the Commander of the Azov's 3rd Brigade , and former head of Azov's National Corps and the Azov Battalion.

It mentioned the US are arming Azov again.

Plough down into this beeb item, and there are some interesting comments on the results of the investigations carried out on obituaries etc.

Quite appalled at the sheer numbers involved ... so many senseless deaths.

defend unoccupied Ukraine hmm that an odd term of phrase during a war

so anything the Russians have not got their hand on already :hmm:
so stopping further Russian advances which is hardly a new idea

Some detailed ‘before and after’ satellite imagery of the three large Russian ammo depots hit by Ukraine over the last week in the link below.

Proper annihilation in some areas, Apparently a large delivery of North Korean ballistic missiles was at one of them. Countless lives must have been saved by this strike.

Do we know what proportion of Russia's ammunition reserves this represents? 20% or 10% or 1% or 0.1%? Without knowing this it's not possible to judge how significant it is.

I doubt it’s possible to come up with a figure, even if you use the before/after shots (separated by a few days) there’s no confirming what had left site or arrived on site between those two images. On the main depot I’ve seen figures of 30,000 tonnes quoted, but this is capacity, and given they’re using this stuff then unlikely the depot would be fully stocked - acting more as a distribution hub. I’d speculate that some of the intact bunkers may have been empty, nothing inside to be triggered by the main blast which would take the roof off.

One of the big explosions registered as a seismic event, and from footage of the explosion likely detonated most of the other items on site. A blast wall wouldn’t have helped. The site is also now littered with unexploded remnants which makes it effectively unusable for now.

Some of the commentary [I think ISW but I may have mis-remembered that] mentioned that the amount of explosives represented by the explosions recorded equates to between two and three months of artillery shells at 10,000 shells per day. However, commentators seem to think that some of the larger explosions seen were missiles going bang.

This attack at Torpets, and other ammo dumps will have at least some affect on the russian ability to wage war, how much that actual affect is or for how long it will last is unknown.
However, at least those particular shells, bombs and missiles will no longer be able to be used against civilians.

The success of these attacks may persuade the russians to move to a greater level of dispersal for such assets, which will make a repetition of the attack harder but will come with a logistical price [longer delivery chains, for example, needed a greater number of trucks] although FPV drones are quite good for taking out individual trucks.

Oh, these were significant attacks on a number of levels !

  • Zelenskyy said his “victory plan” is not about negotiating with Russia, but finding a way of ending the conflict diplomatically. The head of the presidential office Andriy Yermak confirmed that an invitation to join Nato is part of Ukraine’s so-called “victory plan”, details of which have not been revealed yet by Zelenskyy, who is due to present it to Biden this week.
Trying again to drag NATO into his war. Will he succeed?

You can buy little boxes that will fit in your pocket or a backpack that will block all mobile signals for a reasonable radius. I was thinking of getting one when I commuted by tube. I should think you could fit a far more powerful one in a van.

Bit more complicated to do this now with 4 and 5G.

You can get them way cheaper than that

None of them even claim to block 4 or 5g (and nothing on eBay does). Most of the results are Faraday bags. If someone on a train is annoying me by talking on speakerphone I think they're going to notice me putting their phone in a bag.

Either way, it's clear that mobile signal blocking is eminently doable and anyone claiming it isn't simply doesn't know what they're talking about,
