Bitcoin discussion and news

Ripple is interesting. It's not quite the same thing as bitcoin. It's a sort of IOU exchange. Litecoin is the same, just a slightly different variation. Less intensive computing required and better suited to smaller transactions.

As to why - most are being developed by techies who are hoping their idea will be the next big thing.

From that story this made me chuckle. The site's been running for years, so far it seems one person has been arrested after drugs were intercepted in the post. Perhaps there's one million dollars of sales a month. In response to the one arrest:

In a statement, local police said the arrest proved they were "one step ahead" of criminals on online networks.

DHS have frozen bitcoin money transfers. (well, at least from Dwolla)

Financial privacy free of government intrusion and interference is dead.
In what seems to be the government’s latest attack on private transactions between individuals, the Department of Homeland Security has shut down funds transfers operated by mobile processing platform Dwolla, which is responsible for managing transfers for the BitCoin digital currency exchange.

More detailed information is a bit lacking at the moment, could this be the begining of the end?
What reasons could they have of closing down these transfers, Illegal activity using bitcoins maybe?

The last time I sold some bitcoins, I met up with someone in a bar in Canary Wharf, sent a text, and got handed an envelope full of twenties. GL stopping that.

Those days are over, Facebook-tokens are the way forward, or Google-points, or Mastercard-bucks or whatever. If only you could imagine the Power of British Home Stores.

I transfer from my bank account to bitstamp, wait for the transfer to clear (about 3 days) then I can use that to buy bitcoins. The whole thing is easy and done online, just annoying that it is not quicker.

Cool, a friend in the UK wants to get some bitcoins. I will tell them to get it via bitstamp then :)

I second bitstamp it seems the easiest way, although the bank transfer took 8 days for me and there was the £25 fee my bank charged.

Article in the guardian today, apparently the Pembury has taken £800 in ale sales by bitcoin, enthusiasts are making special trips there .

not used the app, my self.. but is everything ok with the address you are entering? maybe it has a space at the end by accident, or something.

Yeah tried a few times. Even sending money to my desktop wallet and same problem. Its the app that appears to be the problem.

It's not been mentioned much in the media but a lot of the key bitcoin exchanges have had their financial lifelines pulled from under them over the last couple of months.

For instance, it used to be reasonably easy to transfer money into mtgox using a service like Dwolla and OkPay but now those providers have pulled out. Now, from Britain, you have to make an international money transfer to a Japanese bank account account. It's a costly and time consuming process.

The value of these exchanges to Bitcoin is that they are the ones that have ended up setting the exchange rates. Although there hasn't been the panic that I would expect and the value of a bitcoin has help up reasonably well.

Right Im struggling with this-its still not letting me send me 1bitcoin to an alternative wallet or even silk road. Any help would be appreciated

I know Im sounding thick here but whats in my wallet isnt being allowed to transfer anywhere-so how would I get it to another app or online service?

I don't really know. Just offering ideas. I use the application on a PC, and there is a small wallet.dat file that is your key to your account. This is the thing you back up or put on another computer. Is there one of those on the phone?

Might be a good idea to contact the app manufacturer..

Which of the apps do you use?
