XL Bully dog - discussion

Which breeds do you think should be banned? xl bullies, pitbulls?

Let’s start with these, the low hanging fruit, and see how things go. Start keeping proper records and if any other breeds show themselves to be particularly troublesome, ban them too.

The whole “my pitbull is a big softie” is a load of nonsense. Other people don’t know that and a terrified of it, soft or not, particular those with kids.

Dog owners do not have the right to scare the shit out of people.

Where will you get this data from? The UK do not seem to either accurately log dog type for attacks if at all

(Soz you replied while my post was underground!)

They probably do exist to some extent, e.g (just from BMJ letters, but there are a couple of references, I'm not going digging):

But I don't think beesonthewhatnow is in a position to fund further studies/start a parliamentary committee or something.

Zactly. Doesn't exist. So now what?

What do you do when for example there's a new deadly virus going around and you don't have sufficient peer-reviewed stats on transmission methods? Do you think fuck it let's carry an as normal and maybe in a few years we'll have some nice stats, or do you take reasonable measures based on what information you do you have?

No, the kid - not a toddler, btw - wasn't unattended, but disobedient - they had been told not to go in the back of the yard - the dog's in the run.
And watching the kid is the responsibility of the parent, not the dog owner.
Who are not the same people.
Well yeh by they I meant the parents, sorry I thought that was implied. Parents knew this was an issue and failed to monitor it.

I love dogs but think people are kidding themselves if they don't accept that all dogs have the potential to be dangerous and by nature of their physiology, that danger increases markedly with some breeds.

I've seen these XL Bullies in person, and they're almost comically and very distincively antisocial, that's the whole appeal to a certain type of dog owner. I think it's obvious that you can love dogs and love people and want to see the back of the pet equivalent of driving a tank to Morrisons.

Put another way, would we argue that people should be allowed to own large and strong types of cats as family pets on the basis that smelly old Smokey the tabby next door only scratches the occasional visitor?

And I'm sure lots of people can tell anecdotes about how long they've owned a collection of assault rifles without any harm coming to anyone. But that's not really a compelling reason to allow ownership of assault rifles.
And the data you're raving about is anecdata from farcebook, so just as equally valid then. :p

The similarity with some dog owners and the whole gun debate in the US is quite amazing.

“Oh but my thing is fine, I’m a responsible owner and I’ve never had a problem…”

Well, tough. Others have caused deaths. Get rid of them.
People have caused deaths. Get rid of them?

Certainly. I should be allowed to keep a tiger and it should have free run of the back gardens like any other cat. If people are scared then it's their own fault for not being a cat lover like me. My tiger has yet to kill so removing her now would be a violation of her feline rights.

I tend to view everything through a fairly tight scientific/statistical lens, so I’d start there. It’s clear certain breeds are not simply “man’s best friend” family pets, present a much greater statistical risk than others, and should have an outright ban, effective immediately. And yes, that would involved euthanising some animals. I am OK with that. Other (all?) breeds we need to look at a return to licensing/registration of owners, with possibly also looking at mandatory training/requirements for ownership.
With the licencing and training is this a free thing? Or will it be locked behind a paywall meaning that the affluent are the only ones who can have dogs?

I'm not totally against the idea I'd worry on how this would be implemented though and there are already a lot of barriers to people being able to have animals. We weren't able to have a dog due to being in private rented accommodation, but our landlord eventually relented. Felt like I was begging my parents.

There really needs to be a clampdown on breeding though. It's ridiculous the amount of puppy farm dogs that get abandoned and the whole trade is pretty barbaric tbh. I also think a training scheme and registration scheme would be better for the animals themselves as there are so many people that abuse animals and keep them in unsafe environments.

Swift google of US stats (broadly similar in terms of dogs, apart from numbers?).
