It’s not even a letter in the Russian alphabet. Different fighting units are using different letters and ‘Z’ was the most prominent at the beginning of the war, seems to be more ‘V’ and ‘O’ now.I still don't know what the Z stands for. although I've recently watched Shaun of the Dead again which has given me a clue.

Zapad was the name of the "military exercise" that preceded the war, hence vehicles having been painted with the Z.Zapad and Vostok for west and east. Roman alphabet to save paint? There isn't a compass point that starts with 'o' though.
