Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

More likely the Ukrainians shot the plane down and then the Russians decided it had been stuffed full of Ukrainian POWs.

I don't want to shock anyone but, you know, the Russians have been known to be less than completely honest on occasions.
Sure Russia lies almost constantly, but that does not mean everything is a lie.

It is a war and tragedies happen daily.

What we can be sure of is it would not have happened if Russia had never invaded.

RE US funding
“It’s looking more unlikely that Ukraine aid gets done. If it doesn’t get done now, the next window of opportunity is going to be after the election in November,” said Jon Lieber, managing director at the Eurasia Group. “But even then you still have Republicans controlling the House who don’t care about this.”

Possibly been mentioned already but BBC have made a documentary series about Putin v the West (a similar documentary series came out 2014). Starts tonight on BBC 2 I think first few episodes are on player already.

RN donating ships

I doubt it.
"In May 2023, it was reported that the refit had been suspended due to the poor material condition of the ship, making her future uncertain."

Not just that, but up to 2023 she'd been kept fairly up-to-date. The Sea Ceptor missiles are only about 5 years old, and no-one has given Ukraine anything that new for the Russians to steal. Maybe Monmouth, who never even made her mid-life refit, but she's been fully decommed for a few years now and it's non-trivial to revert it to an active state.

Add it to my "I would love to be proven wrong" list. The Type 23s are nice boats and all, but it's a double problem of them all getting a bit tired by now and the RN thinking that they were going to keep them until fairly recently (which means recent kit they don't want to hand out). Yes, a decent hull can go past 30 years but the older ones are in need of some TLC if they were going to life extend them.

I thought that it was impossible for anyone to donate decent sized ships as our NATO allies in Ankara refuse to let any warships through the Dardanelles strait.
Ukraine's hope has been that they can train on them in the Med and once ownership is officially transferred to Ukraine they can claim that they're "based" at Odessa and be allowed passage.
It's a bit pie in the sky, honestly.

Yes, as presumably that would also enable Turkey’s other great mate to declare that its various fleets are based on the Black Sea.

To a point, they could try it out. Ukraine, of course, doesn't have anywhere else to base their vessels in the first place so it's somewhat more legitimate a claim.
I'm not sure why Russia would want to move things there. The Black Sea is a Russian Sea. Ukraine doesn't have a navy worth mentioning, even if they got a pair of minelayers and rusting frigates. I wouldn't want to be based on them if they got through Turkey. I suppose they'd live hours rather than minutes, but still. Russia moving more ships into the Black Sea is just an opportunity to get them sunk.

In the end, I think they can play legal semantics all they want and Turkey is still going to say "No, fuck off." and no-one will question their stance on it.

getting tense at the top
interesting bit in this article for me is
"In December, leaked polling seen by the Kyiv Independent suggested that Zaluzhnyi was Zelenskiy’s leading challenger and that the incumbent would only narrowly beat him, by two points in a runoff."

Election is due in March but little sign it will happen as of yet

No why do I have an image of you sitting there and rubbing your hands with glee? :D
It’s a wrong image in your imagination. I read the news of the ongoing war with the same despair since the beginning. I wring my hands and rage occasionally at the sheer stupidity of many involved.

I think of the future when this is finished. A more right wing EU. With its own armed forces. Demobilised highly nationalist Ukrainian soldiers hiring themselves out. The ripple of stolen weapons flooding Europe.

I despise the cheerleaders for this. The Ukrainians have climbed a tree with no plan to get down.

To be fair the russians helped them up

Are the "cheerleaders" in the room with us now? :hmm:

and ...
splash one [1] corvette

watching that clip, it seems that at least two of the sea drones hit the same area on the port side, and from the size of the explosion, I think the magazine went up, so no surprise that it sank after that.

I thought Zaluzhnyi was supposed to be introducing the new conscription legislation in the Ukraine Parliament alongside the Defence Minister? The first draft was sent back for amendment after criticism and Zelensky had ordered them to introduce the revised bill rather than him .
