Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

He's right. While it's understandable for Ukrainians to feel some kind of way about it, there's nothing to celebrate in Westerners having a ghoulish laugh about hundreds of people dying. We've had this conversation over and over again.
Who here is indulging in 'ghoulish laughs'?

And if he's so fucking clever that he thinks these are "stupid and politically shit forums" he can fuck right off.

The post he's responding to is literally an Urbanite thumbs-upping a simulation of the Moskva being sunk, played for laughs. Which depending on whose estimates you believe was an event that killed more or fewer people, but either way it's forgivable from people in a war zone, not for Western armchair generals whose main connection to it all seems to be on a level of a football match rather than a clear-eyed view that the people actually dying, on both sides, are mostly poor and propagandised young men who in a better world would be with their loved ones living normal lives.

And people call forums shit all the time, who cares.

I don't think its worth deciding 'we' are all politically shit. There's a point there sure. But at the end of the day most people like the video because it's a small 'fuck you' and are appreciating that moment.

Yes but it's the reaction of a Ukrainian. If you can't understand why that person might give such a reaction, or why people here might be able to empathise with her response, I really can't help you.

Is A-Chap Ukrainian? Because his bio suggests otherwise. Fortunately I'm not asking for your help, I'm making a point about a tendency for folks to forget that war isn't a footie game, and that the understandably visceral reactions of people whose lives have been upturned are not an excuse to forget your own humanity.

I'm talking about the person in the video and her reaction.

I am not laughing at the poor sods that lost their lives on that ship, but I am laughing at the Ukrainians putting a model of it in their Science Museum and the reaction of that young lady, that's a very different thing.

I think some people are just too desperate to assume that people supporting Ukraine must be doing so for nefarious reasons...like War Porn.

Easier, perhaps, than accepting that there might be a different viewpoint than theirs that might actually have some validity.

It's clearly not taking pleasure in young sailors losing their lives. That's a silly, agenda-driven point to try to press.

Commenting favourably on the misfortunes of a Russian campaign that's torturing and murdering its way through a neighbouring state is perfectly reasonable though.

Have I exhibited this "desperate" tendency on the thread so far? I'd note I am also in favour of Ukrainians defending themselves and have been from the start.

What I'm not doing is a goofy thumbs-up, which if it is laughing at a ludicrous situation rather than approving of its message, is clearly ambivalent enough that multiple people didn't take it as such. I've been consistent about criticising the latter perspective on this thread, too, it certainly does exist.

this is of course where the hide-bound science museum in kensington comes up short, never having had the wit to install similar models of the tirpitz, scharnhorst, belgrano or haguro

which side are you on?
The working class. And in most other circumstances I'd be a full-throated opponent of either side raising their guns at all. As it is I'm in favour of people defending their homes against an imperial invader, strongly applaud every Russian who's acted to try and slow or stop their own side from continuing the forward march, and deeply saddened by every other aspect of this fucking mess.

I think the vast majority of posters on here would totally agree with that.

Not to say one life isn't a tragedy, but do remember that that official figure is that one person died. Yes, it's probably more than that, but only the Russians actually know and they say it's one.

Yeah. I don't like the characterisation of Russians as "orcs", but I can see why Ukrainians might feel entitled to call them that. And, although I am always pleased to hear of some Russian military defeat or rout, it's not really cause for me to celebrate or go around punching the air. But I can - again - well understand why people who are or have been under the yoke of Russian occupation, which sounds absolutely bloody beyond grim, might well see Russian defeat and loss of life as something to celebrate. I'm certainly not going to judge them for that.

Why do you think they need help from you?

'A year after the invasion, Ukraine is riddled with Russian collaborators and sympathizers.'

Think they may be over egging the pudding however if the issues they outline exist even on a smaller scale in these areas what on earth is their strategy going to be regarding Ukrainians who have been living in the areas occupied by Russia since 2014 ? Surely there's got to be some hearts and minds stuff rather than just the threat of mass arrests?
