Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Interesting thread on Starlink here:

It's complicated but it's not all about Elon. Lots of people paying for their connections just like we do for our broadband.

In a way Musk is quite a useful "richest person in the world" because every time he indulges in petty shit like this it's a reminder that actually meritocracy is a lie and letting billionaires do whatever they like is foolish. Bill Gates by contrast was quite good at maintaining the illusion when he was number one.

It is all about Musk. The only question is where he sits in the the Venn diagram of “cunt, compromised, greedy, fool, corrupt”.

It’d be a shame if he accidentally fell out of a window.

Sorry, I put that badly. Wrote it in a hurry.

"It's complicated but it's not just about Musk withholding service. Lots of people are paying for their connections just like we do for our broadband so even if he is whining about not getting paid...he is."

It would not be a shame if a rocket ship fell on his head.

Repairs completed is different from bridge usable. The rail line was in use again pretty quickly, I think.

In this case I believe the bridge lacks capability to support HGVs until further work is done, but lighter vehicles have been able to use it.

I've looked for videos of rail traffic and couldn't find anything. May be on RT?

3.5 tonne road vehicles max according to a couple of news sources.

However, it's "According to the Russian ministry of Transport"

Regardless of what you think of Musk, why would anyone expect his, or any other corporation, to supply Ukraine for nothing?

Do you think the manufacturers of all the other kit are just giving it away?

I thought they were pissed off with the equipment not working near Crimea and his proposed peace plan that gave away territory. Not the running costs.

He’s not paying for it. The US and Poland have been paying enormous amounts, plus individuals in Ukraine. Musk implied he’s been forking out from the goodness of his heart to dupe most people who don’t look at the details.

No, that's not correct.

His claim is that Washington and crowd-funding are covering part of the cost but SpaceX is still out of pocket by about $80mio.

He says $80m. Putting trust in Musk is demonstrably misguided. Others who know who’s paying are mightily pissed off.

“Though Musk has received widespread acclaim and thanks for responding to requests for Starlink service to Ukraine right as the war was starting, in reality, the vast majority of the 20,000 terminals have received full or partial funding from outside sources, including the US government, the UK and Poland, according to the SpaceX letter to the Pentagon.

SpaceX’s request that the US military foot the bill has rankled top brass at the Pentagon, with one senior defense official telling CNN that SpaceX has “the gall to look like heroes” while having others pay so much and now presenting them with a bill for tens of millions per month.

According to the SpaceX figures shared with the Pentagon, about 85% of the 20,000 terminals in Ukraine were paid – or partially paid – for by countries like the US and Poland or other entities. Those entities also paid for about 30% of the internet connectivity, which SpaceX says costs $4,500 each month per unit for the most advanced service. (Over the weekend, Musk tweeted there are around 25,000 terminals in Ukraine.)”

Why should the war in Ukraine cost SpaceX anything at all?

Are the manufacturers of all the other arms and ammunition that's going in there subsidising UKR?

Musk said the $80 million he's talking about includes the cost to "create, launch, maintain & replenish satellites" - wouldn't they have been up there anyway? The number of Starlink subscribers has more than tripled since the start of the war, he's probably getting his money's worth in free advertising.

This is just Musk being a dick again because his stupid idea was rejected in strong terms, same as happened with his Thailand cave rescue shit.

Bayraktar has donated a few UAVs, because they see the value in the positive publicity they were getting earlier in the war, like a product advert. Musk has probably got loads of good publicity off Ukraine using his kit too, which he’s now pissed up a wall by being a contrarian arsehole.

Because he came in on his horse and said "don't worry lads, here's my satellites, fill yer boots". Then got a big cob on when half the world called him out as a bit of a cunt for saying lets give Putin most of what he wants, and also lets fuck the Taiwanese folks whilst we're at the table.
