Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I love the guys posts. Russian, but not pro Putin, but not foaming at the mouth anti either. Talking about the differences and similarities between Russia and Ukraine and their shared history.

Many ethnic Ukrainians were stellar servants of the Russian and Soviet state, but the Ukrainians find little pride in that. They tell the world about us stealing from them the legacy of medieval Kievan Rus. They view us as descendants of Mongol and Turkic invaders. The Ukrainian war, they say, is the final battle between the old Rus and the Golden Horde.

I was going to ask what was going on here & why you posted it, but the first reply on that twitter thread is - "It's old footage of the Antonovsky bridge close to Kherson, everybody calm down."
TBF, quite a lot of the troll farms say "it's old footage" about anything that gets posted...

A joke.

So, the Russians advance, and 10 soldiers overrun a Ukrainian position with only 2 Ukrainian soldiers left. As the 10 Russians decide what to do, one of the Ukrainians shouts, "You stupid Russian orcs, one Ukrainian soldier is worth 10 of you idiots". So the Russians rush the position, and, under withering fire, are beaten back with several dead and injured.

The survivors radio back to base for reinforcements, and in due course, 100 Russian soldiers arrive and attack the position. Again, they are beaten back with many casualties, and a voice from the Ukrainian position shouts "You idiots, one Ukrainian soldier is worth a hundred of you fools".

The Russians radio for more reinforcements, and soon, 500 Russians are attacking the position. The attack is - again - a failure, as the Ukrainians decimate them, and they are forced to retreat. A different Ukrainian voice yells "You fools, don't you know that one Ukrainian soldier is worth 500 of you stupid orcs!"

The Russians retreat to consider their options, and a senior officer asks them what went wrong. A soldier replies "Well, sir, it is clear that they lied to us - there are TWO Ukrainian soldiers in that trench, not one".

What some Ukrainians may have done in the past isn't relevant to what those alive today want from their future. That's not hard to grasp.

Children in Ukraine ordinarily go back to school in September, but in Yagidne, a small village near Chernihiv, the school won't be attended.

Early in the invasion, Yagidne was occupied by Russian invaders. The majority (around 350-370) of villagers had to remain in the basement of the school in cold, cramped, unhygienic conditions, lacking food and oxygen. Ages of the people in the basement were between a few-months-old baby and 93 years old. 11 people died; nobody was allowed to even bury the dead ones.

Writing remains on the walls and doors, a calendar marking the days, colurful childrens drawings, a list of the people who died there.

On April 3rd, the village was liberated.
