Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Kind of singling out the Ukrainian government for growing rich when all governments grow rich is the point? So there was literally no point to singling out the Ukrainian government?
The war under discussion is in Ukraine.

Thank you for you attention to detail with this post. I wanted to say above that the Russian way of war so similar to the American and I'm grateful for your example of such
I learnt this purely by coincidence as currently watching Oliver Stone’s documentary, JFK: Destiny Betrayed.
The parallels are rather distinct.

Expecting claims that they're running a paedophile ring out of a pizza restaurant basement imminently...

(excuse flippancy, but jesus it's not even that far from the truth)
i'm not going to post them here but just had a look and there are hundreds of posts claiming exactly this, though not in connection with pizza, some of the child trafficking victims are in the basement at chernobyl though.

Really inspiring stuff this. Truly it motivates one to want to change the world for the better. With a vision like this, the world is sure to improve.

Am I the only one getting really fucking sick to the back teeth with this kind of socio-political fatalism?
It's useless, and above all boring, teenage angst shit. All the more shitter coming from an old saddo like lletsa or whoever this one used to be on here.

I just wish he'd share his own opinions and not some second-hand dross

Nobody's trying to stop anybody changing the world.

He's just earned himself a two day ban off this thread.

Any discussion about this to be taken to the feedback forum please.

thought the same about this
We'll learn fuck all from this. History IS this being done time and time again by varying shades of cunts.

never mind eh, boil it down to some black and white argument where you can dismis the conflict to a sarcastic "we made him to do it " and endlessly repeat. no nuance to talk about. boo at the bad man.

Not sure what you’re reading but that article does say it was initially expected to be over in 2 weeks not in a couple of days.
Well, day 15 now. Not saying that this is good news, just that the idea based on those documents that it was all still going more or less to plan was wrong.
That still seems to be spinning the bollocks that Putin assumed it would be over in a couple of days. Captured documents indicated that the military were anticipating it to take around 15 days to achieve their objective (primarily taking Kiev) which we maybe not far off from, heroic narratives aside.

It also makes me even more sure that 'we wont get attacked if we are just really careful about where we hand over those planes' is stupid and pointless.

Avoiding escalation doesn't guarantee anything but it does mitigate risk. What is clear from events so far, is that Putain would have a greater incentive to go nuclear than NATO if the conflict spread, because the balance of power doesn't favour Russia in terms of conventional warfare by any stretch of the imagination. This is also a good reason to believe that he is unlikely to extend operations beyond Ukraine unless he feels pushed to do so any time soon. Maybe Western powers could call his bluff, but if they miscalculate, what is happening in the Ukraine now could look like a sideshow to the rest of the northern hemisphere being devastated and a nuclear winter would then put everyone else's concerns about global heating to rest.

Although that phrase was originally used by US airforce general Curtis Le May. Who apparently said it after incinerating two thirds of Japanese cities in World War II.
He was in charge of the airforce when JFK was President and used the phrase again against Cuba.
He was bitterly disappointed that Kennedy rejected his plan.
The phrase has been used by many since.

He used it when talking about the DRV in the mid-1960s. That without the use of ground forces, the US could use air and naval power to destroy the north Vietnamese state's industry and infrastructure.

Most of us are born mugs and die mugs,

Is this what passes for left wing politics on here? Even the most cursory glance at history reveals how specious and dis-empowering this is.

As EP Thompson - remember him? - once memorably put it "the working class did not rise like the sun at an appointed time. It was present at its own making....and is a social and cultural formation that is constantly evolving over time".
