Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

on top of what you've said here i wonder what the various dubious groups he's given money to across europe will be expected to do now, presumably the moscow gold wasn't given without expecting a quid pro quo. sure they've war-gamed a range of responses to various levels of aggression and have some counter-measures to them. perhaps as blunt as turning off the gas or denying russian airspace to civilian flights. perhaps cyber-attacks. sure some of you remember this story - can't hack a typewriter

I see AfD have called for no action to be taken, to prevent escalation.

They're a bit wishy washy tbf.

"The order bars "new investment, trade and financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in" the so-called Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic"

That's not wishy washy, it's just the first and obvious step to take if you don't accept the formations of the states. I wouldn't have thought there'd be many Americans beating down the doors to do business with them at the moment anyway, so it's a diplomatic token gesture.

Surely Putin is just breaking international law in a specific and limited way?

(Sarcasm - fuck Putin, absolute shithead)

Sanctions must be a finely balanced thing to impose right? Like not harsh enough or in the wrong areas, and it'll make no difference, too much and it'll give him a chance to blame hardship etc. on 'the West' even more, possibly leading to an escalation and wider confrontation?

Some commentator this morning saying Putin won't care that much, capital and personal wealth will just move for a bit, and unless shelves start being empty in Russia it'll won't be noticed much, or at all.
I'm pretty sure Russia's self-sufficient in food these days. The old kolkhozes have been replaced by big agri-business corporations.

this is wrong. the liberals are the most war hungry, not the right.
The fbpe crowd are foaming at the mouth to go to war.
Funnily enough I noticed amongst the #FBPE #StandWithUkraine Twitter crowd at least three members of Stockport's Liberal Dems , one retweeting a petition to 'pledge any necessary military support to defend Ukraine'

Germany has stopped the certification process for the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in reaction to Russia’s recognition of the self-proclaimed republics in Luhansk and Donetsk in east Ukraine, chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced.

On Tuesday morning, Germany’s energy minister, Robert Habeck, instructed the withdrawal of a positive assessment required to authorise the pipeline between Russia and Germany.

“Without this certification Nord Stream 2 cannot go into operation,” Scholz said at a press conference in Berlin at midday.

The German leader described Putin’s recognition of the Russian-controlled territories as a “grave breach” of international law that broke with decades of agreements between Russia and the west. “The situation today is fundamentally different”.

The past decade or two has indeed pushed the Russians into greater self sufficiency- I made a comment about Russian cheese industry earlier - they now produce their own ersatz french cheeses for example

Well, this is a surprising move from Germany, looks like they have woken up to the fact that Putin has taken them for mugs.

This sort of thing along with our fuckwit in chief actually having the balls to properly sanction are the only things that will make Putin think twice now. I don't see the second part of the equation happening though, not when so much of Russian dirty money is sloshing about in London and the current ruling party.

The exact timing may be a slight surprise but this just confirms the trajectory that Biden and Scholz laid out at the beginning of February. Bidens has been on about the USA pulling the plug on this for months and Scholz said at the press conference in reference to the USA's approach "As I said, we are acting together. We are absolutely united and we will not be taking different steps. We will do the same steps and they will be very, very hard to Russia and they should understand,"

Doesn't Rees-Mogg have several millions stashed away in Moscow? I'm sure I read that somewhere at the time of the Brexit vote.

Anyway, Brexit in general requires turning UK into an off-shore financial services (money laundering) platform. This limits UK's attempts to play the great power.
