Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I have no idea tbh.

Just saw this:

Watched the dubbed translation on YouTube last night. The guy was terrified. And said more than he was supposed to by referencing absorbing the two new independent countries nto Russia.

Putin shut him down and treated him like a bully teacher would treat a kid in a classroom.

sergei naryshkin is i hear still on the naughty step at the lubyanka

At this point yes, it was expected to be one of the last moves in a range of sanctions.
Yes but Biden wants to up the stakes a bit now. I read a quote somewhere on the lines of 'Yes Putin loves Nord Stream 2 but he loves Ukraine more'. An interesting thing for me about Nord Stream 2 is that 50% of its costs are financed by 5 European energy companies ( well 4 plus a UK one) "These five European energy companies have committed to provide long-term financing for 50 % of the total cost of the project, which is currently estimated to be €9.5 billion. Each European company will fund up to €950 million. Gazprom is and will remain the sole shareholder of the project company, Nord Stream 2 AG.

Battle lines are being drawn up. Some old lefties and some anarcho's supportive of Putin, rightwingers getting all Ra Ra Ra for the West, liberals crying and wringing their hands.

Yeah. Fuckwits all. The bletings of the irelevant, ignorant, week or mendatious.

Joining NATO has been in ukraines constitution since 2019. It is oft mentioned by nato itself as moving towards membership. It was undoubtedly the plan, even if it was always going to be hellish to implement.

This is in Kiev's hands as I've said. If they accept losing lugansk and Donetsk and recognize having lost crimea to boot, they may avoid war for now. Anything else necessarily equals war for the government held portions of lugansk and Donetsk

This really doesn't look like its got much to do with NATO expansion does it.

what does that even mean, which nations can be said to represent all people on their territory idk.

Ukraine doesn't control all its territory because some of it is currently occupied by Russia. Therefore Ukraine is not a proper country and Russia might as well help itself to the rest of it.

The terrifying part is that that might actually make sense in Lavrov's head. More likely he knows it's bullshit but simply doesn't care.

so you suggest the choice is war now or war later, but war nonetheless

A couple of interesting paragraphs from the Financial Times coverage:

"Moscow has previously seen the two statelets as an insurance policy in Ukraine. It has demanded that their return to Ukraine would come with their veto over major foreign policy decisions, notably Kyiv’s application to join Nato, which is a red line for Moscow.'

"A bigger problem emerges in the medium-term: the two statelets each claim all of the Ukrainian districts of Luhansk and Donetsk. Russia has not made clear whether it is acknowledging their claims to territory under Kyiv’s control."

Ooh, sanctions on 5 banks and 3 individuals. Well that’s gonna stop the tanks in their tracks.
Just listening to Bill Browder (bloke who successfully lobbied for the magnitsky act) said the individuals were already sanctioned 4 years ago by America, one of the banks had already been sanctioned too and the others are small fry so yeah, as expected, fuck all done.

Problem is Putin doesn't want to be a good neighbour he wants to be in Charge he wants the Warsaw Pact back the Days of Russia being a Great Power.

Much like the post imperial posing by the 🇬🇧 except only a few deluded idiots want to roll challenger tanks into dublin🙄
