Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Ursula von der Leyen on twitter says the EU "and its partners" (what - trade partners? What exactly does this mean?) will react with unity. Don't see how with their very different interests here. :hmm:
The recognition of the two separatist territories in #Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law, the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the #Minsk agreements. The EU and its partners will react with unity, firmness and with determination in solidarity with Ukraine.

It will be interesting to see what sanctions this government applies. the last time the Russians did something naughty (like practically use chemical weapon on British soil), they got a slap on the wrist from their Tory friends.

Suspending their access to SWIFT would make things tricky for the wider petrodollar flows, but their new best mates China will take everything they are offered assuming logistics allow and ultimately supply most of Russia’s imports anyway Putin should have put measures in place to circumvent even more sanctions most likely. It a frightful situation that Vlad has put us into

My word. Pure theatre.

The kind of thing you'd more expect from that North Korean bellend.
To be fair he's playing the chumps Boris and Joe a blinder really.

"When will we be able to stay up and watch Shock and Awe again daddy?"
"George please stop talking to that picture of Joe, he's not your daddy".

Looking at the territory Putin is half inching, it indicates he’s bottled it. His big show today was a likely an effort to make him look all powerful and dangerous when he’s mostly backed down.

I disagree he's playing anyone.

I think the bloke's off his fucking head and we're in an extremely dangerous situation.
He's playing the game all the way? We have him down as a naked horse riding sociopath but then we get all meh! when he plays a curveball like this in the form of a naked horse riding sociopath.

I thinks he's played his first move quite well here. Putin has always had a pokerface and is a long game player.

Boris and Joe on the other hand have shown their cards before the croupier has joined the table.

Now they're waiting for old freedom fries to sort it out

:D

The US have moved their diplomatic staff to Poland. Which suggests that they think that Russia is going invade the whole of Ukraine.

just read some bits translated of the speech that Putin just gave on russian tv and am now appropriately terrified. I had no idea he was like this. he says Ukraine was never a proper country, but not just Ukraine, he says that it was 'madness' that national republics were ever given the right to leave the Russian Empire.

He’s been on about it for years.
