Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Imagine this will go down like a cup of cold sick with the actual people of Belarus - and not sure how motivated the armed forces are going to be. Plus - it presumably puts the regime on the international shit list with Russia wrt sanctions etc.
Yeh. There's the auld military adage of never to give an order if you don't know it will be obeyed. And if there are uncertainties about some russian units' desire to fight Ukraine sure that's much greater among the Belarus army

I guess we can hope it is accurate, it would certainly seem an interesting development.

Ukrainian forces have repelled a Russian attempt to seize Kharkiv, the city’s governor claimed on Sunday, following fierce fighting and street battles with advancing Russian troops. Kharkiv’s governor Oleh Synyehubov said Ukrainian soldiers were now “cleaning up” the eastern city. He said Russian soldiers were surrendering in groups of five to ten and throwing their equipment in the middle of the road.

“Control over Kharkiv is completely ours!” Synyehubov posted on Facebook. “A complete cleansing of the city from the enemy is happening. The Russian enemy is absolutely demoralised.”

Earlier the governor said Russian light military vehicles had broken “into the city” including in central areas. They arrived in the northern suburbs at 8am, he said. He urged all civilians to stay inside. “Citizens of Kharkiv, don’t leave shelter, don’t use transport,” he said.

Honestly baffled why so many people I've never had a problem with are against me/mugging me off. Take the piss/ignore me/celebrate, doesn't matter to me I'm gone.
Seemed just like a bit of early morning banter to me ie Secret Intelligence Service MI6 would expect recruits to notice a tiny flag in a surveillance photo if you wanted to sign up and not a dig at you personally ;)
I missed it too at first their support is more obvious when they bathe the whole building in Gold and blue lights
You should perhaps stay its getting more like twitter or facebook in this thread at times so you may miss some real early morning pre ban entertaining bun fights :D

I wonder what effect the weather is having?
There seems to have been dry and bright days with no sign of rain for example.
If there was bad weather would it favour the defenders or the invaders?

Get to keep a big chuck of Eastern Ukraine. Severely deplete their military capacity with and agreement not to rebuild it past a certain point. Get Ukraine and NATO to commit to Ukraine never joining???

All of which leaves it primed for another invasion in a few years.

Just my thoughts. I have no idea really.
Barely informed speculation on my part, but that seems like a scenario that Putin would see as a win. Also, following that, the slow but steady withdrawal of sanctions and international pressure (with Germany the first to crumble).

You wouldn’t want to have been in any of those nearby houses. Some big fucking bangs occurred to cause all that. So much blood on Putin’s hands, and for what?
I thought that the armoured vehicles looked comparatively un-beaten up, and I wonder if this is a typical example of an attack on a comparatively soft column with light weapons? I'd imagine the tanker made a bit of a bang when it went up, and there don't seem to be many unbroken windows left in the buildings, so maybe it was a bigger punch up.

Hard to know anything without some context, though.

ETA: OK, I didn't watch to the end before commenting. Maybe it was a bit heavier.

ETA2: if the comments are to be trusted, those Vs signify Chechen groups...

The commentary is basically a stream of cursing. Stupid fucking bitches, nonces etc. He's saying the Russians all ran back the way they had come when attacked.

I probably am thick (i know you didn't say that). Funny though because I've helped so many people out. Anyway sorry for the guilt trip. I'm done. Not at you, and not wholly about last night. All the best and love.

Get the nukes ready lads, they’ve said bad things about us:

Let's hope they just stay on alert.

Interesting overview from retired US Joint Chief:

Well it's from a US military brass who served in the last 20 years so definitely someone with an inside track on how to fail miserably despite an overwhelming resource advantage.

It is interesting because it is the view of a retired US joint chief. It’s all there if you want to see it.
He's an Australian.

I heard that they have to do it before Spring otherwise the thaw will turn the border region into a swamp which is harder to get armour across, or something like that. If Ukraine holds out for warmer weather it could be to their advantage perhaps?

That link has now been updated.

Russian president Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to put the country’s nuclear deterrence forces on high alert in response to “aggressive statements” by NATO countries.

The order, which was announced by the TASS news agency, came at a meeting between Putin, defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia Valery Gerasimov.

“Senior officials of the leading NATO countries also allow aggressive statements against our country, therefore I order the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff [of the Russian Armed Forces] to transfer the deterrence forces of the Russian army to a special mode of combat duty,” Putin said in the statement, which was quoted by state-run TASS.

It is not immediately clear what the “special mode of combat duty” entailed. Putin has warned foreign countries not to interfere in his ongoing invasion of Ukraine, saying it could lead to “consequences they have never seen.” He has positioned anti-air missiles and other advanced missile systems in Belarus and deployed his fleet to the Black Sea in an effort to prevent a western intervention in Ukraine.

The Russian invasion has left hundreds dead. Russia has launched missile strikes against buildings in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other major Ukrainian cities as it threatens an all-out assault not seen since the time of the second world war.
