The Ashes 2017-18

There's no future in England's dreaming
Hohoho, let's start as we mean to go on.

Moeen, Finn to miss first two tour matches

Moeen Ali and Steven Finn have been ruled out of involvement in the first two games of England's Ashes tour.

Scans on the pair have confirmed that Moeen (left side) and Finn (left knee) will not be fit for selection for either the two-day warm-up match starting in Perth on Saturday, or next week's four-day match played under lights in Adelaide. It means both players will have a maximum of one warm-up match - the four-day game in Townsville starting on November 15 - ahead of the Ashes.

Finn with an injured knee eh? That's a turn up for the books.

Some of the language coming out of the aussie camp is not great already. I know he's a thick twat but all that stuff from Warner about war etc. You'd think after what happened to Phil Hughes and the Clark / Anderson incident they'd at least try and be a bit cuter with their language.

Warner is embarrassing, and always has been ever since that incident when he attacked Joe Root for no good reason at all. If he's in their side I reckon we shouild be picking Stokes. No sense in handicapping ourselves when the opposition picks people like that.

If we took Stokes you might upset a few people. Not that many cos the vast majority of English cricket fans would want him to go.

I say fly him out and deal with the consequences after the ashes.

Worried for Woakes. He’s going to be flat track bullied. Plenty more 15-0-75-0 to come I fear.

I agree. He seems to have regressed to what he was two years ago. But still time to rediscover whatever he discovered then. I would think that he shouldn't be a nailed-on selection for the first test - Overton is more or less a like-for-like replacement - but in the absence of Stokes, my guess is that they'll want Woakes at 8.

Time for my traditional moan about the lack of genuine quicks.

Finn's gone home before it's started, Tom Curran is in.

Can any of you lot bowl?

All summer we were worried about batting slots 3,5 and 6. Oh how little we knew.

Come on, one of you must do a bit of right-arm medium?

Have to say much as I hate him Warner went up in my estimation for his actions during the players strike.

Both teams have issues, not just England. That said I think home advantage will count in the end.

Well, you can only bowl at what’s in front of you and Overton appears to have done himself no harm at all in this second warm up match.

With the sick notes increasing and the Gabba looming, selection for the last warm up game should be quite interesting.

I’d have thought the XI picked will Mirror the starting Test team. Then again, Bayliss in charge....so who knows.

Does anyone on here expect anything better than another chastening/humiliating series defeat?

I'd expect the same as the last few years to be honest. Top order wobbles often but not always bailed out by the middle/lower order, and some patchy hit and miss bowling performances. Enough to keep us in the game most of the time but I'd guess not enough to win the series given Australia are at home. They don't look to have enough to blow us away though.

There is always the chance a newbie will step up. Chris Broad did it in 86/7, when a totally unfancied England won. Aus have their own batting frailties as well.

That said I want Ali fit and stokes on a plane sharpish. We can live without Finn / ball.

Thing is while I don't think there's much to choose between the teams, the relatively poor quality of Test cricket at the moment does seem to be leading to very one sided matches/series.

So I can see anything from a 5-0 defeat to a victory as possible. I think you could have a number of games like in this summer's SA series where the winner is apparent by the end of the second day.

Yeah fair point. And the winner tends to be the home team doesn't it. Not a lot of away series victories for anyone in the last few years.

Plenty of changes to Australian team, not that surprising really considering they last played in Bangladesh.

Bancroft for Renshaw seems like an obvious choice. Re-calling Paine is a bit more weird. Shaun Marsh back in as well.
Obviously they won't want Agar + O'Keefe as well as Lyon for a home series, but that's a huge turnover in personnel from one match to the next. They're clearly reliant on as many erratic or unproven players as we are and don't have an adequate keeper/ no7. Doesn't hurt that Stoneman & Malan have found some form.

Still think Stokes should be out there regardless.

"another chastening/humiliating series defeat?"

I thought we held the Ashes!?
The last seven series we have won five.

Australia and England are currently tied on 32 ashes series wins apiece. What's more, both sides have won 18 series at home and 14 away.

E2a: if this coming series is drawn that will be 18 home wins, 14 home defeats and 3 home draws apiece.

Fuck me they're shit. I mean, I knew they had problems but I didn't realise how bad. I think they'll still win because of their bowling in their conditions but I can't remember such underwhelming batting on both sides.

I'm not a fan of comparing generations but I'm scratching my head to think of a worst Ashes series (in my cricket lifetime) in terms of player quality. England have often stunk the place out but at least they were against top level opposition.

On the plus side at least it may be more interesting than our usual 5-0 capitulation.

How many times have we capped 0-5?
